  • Urban Forests

Jianwei Xing, Zhiren Hu et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2026

Urban forests are ubiquitous, yet their impacts and values remain largely unknown. We study a massive urban afforestation policy in Beijing that planted 1/3 of a million acres of greenery in less than a decade. We conduct a remote-sensing audit of the program, finding that it contributes to a substantial greening up of the city. This causes significant downwind air quality improvement, reducing average PM2.5 concentration at city population hubs …

  • Breaking the Iron Rice Bowl

Open Access•Wei Huang, Qingfeng Liu et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2025

This study leverages personnel system reforms within economics departments at Chinese universities to assess the impact of the tenure-track system on research productivity. Using individual-level data on faculty members, we show that tenure-track faculty produce 0.135 (or 100%) more publications in high-quality journals annually during their probationary period compared to faculty hired under the traditional personnel system. Our findings suggest…

We first provide a comprehensive overview of the EV development trend in China, including analysis of market structures, regi…

  • Carbon Isotopic Evidence for Gas Hydrate Release and Its Significance on Seasonal Wetland Methane Emission in the Muli Permafrost of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Open Access•Xiaoqian Li, Jianwei Xing et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

In order to determine the significant role of gas hydrate in seasonal wetland methane emission at the drilling-affected permafrost, the carbon isotopic monthly field monitoring of methane (CH 4 ), as well as carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), emitted from near-surface soil and a gas hydrate drilling well (DK-8) was conducted in the Muli permafrost of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The methane source effused from the well DK-8 was calculated as -25.9 ± 1.4‱ and …

  • Can digitalized tools help stimulate the domestic economy? Evidence from the effects of digital coupons on merchant operation
