Paleoecology of the late Pleistocene avifauna from Marlera (Istria, Croatia) with notes on the voles record
The Eastern Adriatic Coast, owing to its karstic nature, features numerous Quaternary cave sites that mostly date to the Pleniglacial - Late Glacial or Holocene (Marine Isotope Stages 2–1). In this paper, we present a well-preserved small-vertebrate assemblage from the Marlera fossil-cave site (southern Istrian Peninsula), dated to Marine Isotope Stage 3. Taxonomical and paleoecological analyses were conducted on bird and arvicoline assemblages. …
Mammoths, Deer, and a Dog
Eight anatomically and taxonomically different finds are presented in this paper, and they belong to four taxa: woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), and dog (Canis familiaris). All specimens represent allochthonous Late Pleistocene and Holocene animal remains, and all were dredged during the gravel exploitation at the Sekuline site near Molve (Podravina region, SW Pannonian basin, …
Quaternary fauna of the Eastern Adriatic (Croatia) with the special review on the Late Pleistocene sites
The late-Holocene avifaunal assemblage from the island of Palagruža (Croatia)
The late-Holocene bird remains retrieved during archaeological excavations on pelagic island of Palagruža, Croatia, were analysed. The results of the analysis revealed presence of representatives of nine families: Procellariidae, Sulidae, Ardeidae, Accipitridae, Phasianidae, Rallidae, Laridae, Strigidae and Corvidae. Among the bird remains, the most numerous were remains of the Northern Gannet, Morus bassanus, which were widely distributed in the…
The Avifauna of Southern Istria (Croatia) During the Late Pleistocene
This paper presents palaeoecological and taphonomic analyses of bird remains from Late Pleistocene sediments from two caves in southern Istria, Šandalja II and Ljubićeva pećina. Most of the identified species are found today in Istria and along the Adriatic coast, although the presence of ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) and willow grouse (L. lagopus) indicates colder conditions than those characteristic of the region today. Taxa from both sites are cha…
