  • Assessing the Impact of Political Involvement on the Reliability and Validity of Virtualized Real-time-response Measurement

Tobias Waldvogel, Thomas Metz et al.•ARTICLE•Statistics Politics and Policy•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 14

How does political involvement impact on data quality of virtualized Real-Time-Response (RTR) Measurement? The article addresses this issue, drawing on a large field study (n = 5660) conducted during the 2017 German general election campaign. Since it is unclear how heterogeneous characteristics of individuals influence data quality of RTR-Measurement from audiences surveyed outside the lab, we assess the impact of political involvement on the re…

  • Heuristic Synchronization of Real-Time Response Data

Samuel Weishaupt, Linus Feiten et al.•ARTICLE•Statistics Politics and Policy•2021•References: 4

When real-time response data from viewers of a televised debate is collected via the internet, the server timestamps of the received responses may not match the correct times of the debate. This paper addresses the question of how the data could be aligned in retrospect, using an algorithm that approximates the playout delay difference between each viewer’s TV signal. The validity is shown by successfully approximating distinctive delays for view…

  • Assessing the impact of party identification in transnational election campaigns

Open Access•Tobias Waldvogel, Uwe Wagschal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary European…•2021•References: 22

Since the introduction of “Spitzenkandidaten” for the presidency of the European Commission, elections to the European Parliament have been characterised by the dynamic between an increasingly transnational election campaign and a national electoral process. However, the implementation of a European election campaign focusing on transnational top candidates remains controversial because it is still unclear to what extent nationally formed politic…

  • A Catwalk to Congress? Appearance-Based Effects in the Elections to the U.S. House of Representatives 2016

    Open Access•Sebastian Jäckle, Thomas Metz et al.•ARTICLE•American Politics Research•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 58

This article addresses the question of appearance-based effects by looking at the U.S. House of Representatives election 2016. We broaden the focus beyond existing studies by offering a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the three traits attractiveness, competence, and likability while simultaneously taking into account confounding third variables and possible interactions. Corresponding to the comparative character of electoral competition…

  • Oral Questions in the European Parliament

Sebastian Jäckle, Thomas Metz•ARTICLE•Statistics Politics and Policy•2019•References: 27

Internal working structures within parliaments are notoriously hard to capture. While analyses based on bill co-sponsorship work for the US Congress, this approach is not feasible in many parliamentary systems. Drawing on data from the European Parliament’s legislative term of 2009–2014 this article shows that parliamentary questions can be another option. Members of the European Parliament may demand information from the Council or the Commissio…

  • Measuring Real-Time Response in Real-Life Settings

Open Access•Tobias Waldvogel, Thomas Waldvogel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Real-time response (RTR) measurement is an important technique to assess human processing of information. Ever since Maier et al. verified the reliability and validity of physical RTR devices in this journal a decade ago, there has been a growing trend toward virtual measurement platforms to overcome the limitations of conventional, laboratory-based methods. We introduce the Debat-O-Meter, a novel online RTR platform for mobile devices, which all…

  • Beauty Contest Revisited

    Open Access•Sebastian Jäckle, Thomas Metz•ARTICLE•Politics & Policy•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 18

We test the effects of physical appearance on electoral outcomes for the 2013 German national elections. We find that a candidate's perceived attractiveness and, to a lesser extent, competence vis‐á‐vis his or her closest contestant increases the chances of winning a direct mandate, while likability plays a minor role. Additionally, we find the appearance effects to be conditioned by gender, age, and incumbency status. Our study advances existing…

  • Patterns of Publishing in Political Science Journals

    Open Access•Thomas Metz, Sebastian Jäckle•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 12

We constructed a co-authorship network of the global political science community. Two scientists are connected if they have co-authored a paper. We drew on more than 67,000 papers published from 1990 to 2013 in one of today’s 96 core journals. The network consists of more than 40,000 authors located worldwide. We found that the community forms a single, interconnected component as well as numerous unconnected authors. Whereas some are highly prod…

  • Hierarchical, Decentralized, or Something Else? Opposition Networks in the German Bundestag

    Open Access•Thomas Metz, Sebastian Jäckle•ARTICLE•Legislative Studies Quarterly•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 36

Members of the German parliament may force government to publicly answer questions by issuing minor interpellations (kleine Anfragen). We use 3,608 interpellations from the session 2009–13 that have been signed by authoring and supporting members to construct the social network of support relations among members within the three opposition parties. We find that parties differ markedly in terms of internal structure. While social democrats organiz…

  • A Demographic Peace? Youth Bulges and Other Population-Related Causes of Domestic Conflict

Uwe Wagschal, Thomas Metz•ARTICLE•Statistics Politics and Policy•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 20

The following article analyzes violent political conflicts. Starting from theoretical debates on the determinants of violent conflicts, it focuses on intrastate conflicts. The main explanatory factors which are analyzed from different perspectives are demographic factors. Not only the size of the population or the population density is relevant, but also the so-called youth bulge. Youth bulges, i.e. large cohorts of young people, are the main dri…

• Exploring notions of control across cultures

Tobias Scheytt, Kim Soin et al.•ARTICLE•European Accounting Review•2003

It can be argued that the concept of control is one of the most important and yet complex notions of management accounting theory and practice. Despite its importance, it is not fully understood in terms of its significance in an international context. Using an interpretive approach and against the background of structuration theory, this paper explores and identifies differences in notions of control across European cultures. The empirical resea…
