Can Changes to Gender Equality Be Sustained
The aim of this paper is to discuss how changes to gender equality in organizing can be made sustainable. Numerous studies have reported on projects which have not succeeded in their efforts to implement gender equality. In this paper, we analyse the results from two programmes which aimed to increase equal opportunities among private and public sector organizations. Theoretically, the study is based on the framework of doing gender, which is com…
Doing of gender and scientific knowledge production
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to enable the author to discuss some personal experiences from research and teaching that relate to the special circumstances of doing gender research. Design/methodology/approach When reading about Styhre's and Tienari's experiences, the author is not so surprised by but rather concerned about the resemblance and reflections evoked by the text vis‐à‐vis her own experiences of doing research in the gender fiel…
Sorting people out
This paper examines how people are classified as part of a labour market project aimed at establishing a process for recognizing prior learning among immigrants to Sweden in order to integrate them more quickly with the labour market and society. The paper suggests that, in Sweden, this work prioritizes procedural effectiveness over a more comprehensive understanding of the competence and qualifications of the immigrant worker. By exploring the p…
Women and Work in Family Soap Operas
The starting point of this article is the assumption that images of work and organizing produced by popular culture both reflect and shape actual practices. Among various genres of popular culture, soap operas deserve more attention. This article analyses three local soap operas: one Italian, one Swedish and one South African. All three focus on family life — a focus typical for the genre. We trace the side topic of women at work and women and wo…
When the good times are over
Information and communication technologies play a key role in contemporary organizations. Supported by a longitudinal study of changes in purchasing practices, owing to the implementation of an e-business system at a large, global corporation, this article shows the interplay between the technology and the role of the users. We argue that the introduction of the e-business system increased the hierarchy and bureaucracy but also that the purchaser…
Thinking the multiple in gender and diversity studies
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to discuss the concept of intersectionality. In recent management writing, a vocabulary has been introduced which enacts concepts such as assemblages, multiplicity, rhizomes, and becoming. Such a vocabulary is helpful when revising the theoretical models used in gender research. Design/methodology/approach – Drawing on this fluid mode of thinking, which is fundamentally indebted to a process thinking that fa…
Overcoming the Glass Barriers
Numerous equality programmes have been launched with the aim of promoting a more gender equal work life, yet little substantial action has been reported. This article presents a study of the Women to the Top programme in Sweden, supported by the European Union (EU) and aimed at promoting more women into top management positions. The research suggests that large‐scale projects assembling such heterogeneous actors as industry representatives, polit…
Stories about men implementing and resisting new technologies
In this article the literature on masculinity, gender and technology or science provides the context for discussing two case studies where new information technology has recently been introduced. The empirical material is counter‐intuitive to the general understanding that technology reflects and reinforces men's masculinity and the article provides a variety of theoretical interpretations for these findings

This article presents and discusses the view of gender in education at three departments at Gothenburg School of Economics and Commercial Law. The discussion is based upon a project among teachers at the school, financed by the Educational Government. Our experience is that the view of gender in education and it's possibilities for providing further dimensions to add to well-used pedagogical models are closely connected to the general view of sci…
