Hydroperformativity and the mirage of hydro-power
This article asks how water speaks and relates to Central European people, especially those who have experienced displacement, totalitarianism, droughts, or floods. Based on ethnographic research conducted within the framework of blue anthropology, it focuses on Pilchowice, a postindustrial village in Poland, introduces concepts such as hydroperformativity, water worlds, and water as a transsubstance, and challenges the mirage of hydro-power form…
Flood as permacrisis. Response-Ability, and the Politics of Water
This article analyzes the 2024 flood in Poland as an expression of permacrisis—a chronic, human-accelerated condition rather than a singular natural event. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Lower Silesia and along the Oder River, it examines how anticipatory planning (Cons 2018) shapes emerging responses and forms of response-ability. These are framed through competing discourses: techno-response-abilities (infrastructure, state control), eco-re…
Języki wody – dialog
Languages of Water – Dialogue The text is an experimental sketch based on a dialogue between an ecohydrologist and an anthropologist of culture. The authors will subject a critical, interdisciplinary reflection to various water languages used colloquially or in selected professional discourses. They will ask themselves what water is in different contexts, how it is spoken of, how it is thought of, how it is treated and what role water related lan…
Myśleć przez morze. Sztrandowanie i inne metafory, w poszukiwaniu poznawczych alternatyw
Thinking Through the Sea. Stranding and Other Metaphors, in Search of Cognitive Alternatives In this article, I would like to consider the comparison of stranding to landcentric cognitive processes that translate into the creation of an impossible world – devoid of water and its potentials, rhythms and cycles immersed in it. I will illustrate this with examples of fresh water and sea hydro-policies (including nuclear trials in the Pacific) and wi…
Odrodzenie kulturowe na postkolonialnym Tahiti. Przypadek unu
This article explores contemporary aspects of cultural renewal in postcolonial Tahiti. By focusing on the renewed interest in unu sculptures, I describe practices of indigenous associations, which are trying to address the islanders’ profound cultural identity crisis. As a result of colonial history of the region, the cultural continuity has been almost entirely severed. The activists consciously strive to reclaim the history and knowledge that d…
