  • Physiological and neural synchrony in emotional and neutral stimulus processing: A study protocol

Open Access•Maike Hollandt, Tim Kaiser et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

The present study protocol provides an experimental approach to investigate interpersonal synchrony during emotion processing, allowing for the establishment of research methods in a pilot study, which can later be translated into real-life psychotherapy research. In the future, fundamental understanding of such mechanisms in dyadic interactions is essential in order to promote therapeutic relationships, and thus, treatment effectiveness and effi…

  • Unraveling the comorbidity of depression and anxiety in a large inpatient sample: Network analysis to examine bridge symptoms

Open Access•Tim Kaiser, Philipp Herzog et al.•ARTICLE•Depression and Anxiety•2021

BACKGROUND: Comorbidities in mental disorders are often understood by assuming a common cause. The network theory of mental disorders offers an alternative to this assumption by understanding comorbidities as mutually reinforced problems. In this study, we used network analysis to examine bridge symptoms between anxiety and depression in a large sample. METHOD: Using data from a sample of patients diagnosed with both depression and an anxiety dis…

  • Cognitive Change and Relaxation as Key Mechanisms of Treatment Outcome in Chronic Pain: Evidence From Routine Care

Open Access•Matthias Feldmann, Hauke Jeldrik Hein et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Despite effective treatment approaches within the cognitive behavioral framework general treatment effects for chronic pain are rather small to very small. Translation from efficacy trials to naturalistic settings is questionable. There is an urgent need to improve the effectiveness of well-established treatments, such as cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) and the investigation of mechanisms of change is a promising opportunity. We performed second…

  • Maintaining Outcomes of Internet-Delivered Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Depression: A Network Analysis of Follow-Up Effects

Open Access•Tim Kaiser, Lynn Boschloo et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Background: Depression is a highly prevalent mental disorder, but only a fraction of those affected receive evidence-based treatments. Recently, Internet-based interventions were introduced as an efficacious and cost-effective approach. However, even though depression is a heterogenous construct, effects of treatments have mostly been determined using aggregated symptom scores. This carries the risk of concealing important effects and working mec…

  • An entangled history of postcolonial and socialist education: Institutional transfer for educational equality and national development

Tim Kaiser, Ingrid Miethe et al.•ARTICLE•Paedagogica Historica•2021

Searching for development paths and suitable educational policies, postcolonial governments often turned to the experiences of other countries and sought to adapt these to their own contexts. Research on such processes has largely neglected the resulting entanglements between postcolonial and European socialist countries, and between different postcolonial countries. This gap in research is addressed in this article by tracing a world-spanning hi…

  • Global sex differences in personality: Replication with an open online dataset

Open Access•Tim Kaiser, Marco Del Giudice et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2020

OBJECTIVE: Sex differences in personality are a matter of continuing debate. In a study on the United States standardization sample of Cattell's 16PF (fifth edition), Del Giudice and colleagues (2012; PLoS ONE, 7, e29265) estimated global sex differences in personality with multigroup covariance and mean structure analysis. The study found a surprisingly large multivariate effect, D = 2.71. Here we replicated the original analysis with an open on…

  • Does Financial Education Impact Financial Literacy and Financial Behavior, and If So, When?

Tim Kaiser, Lukas Menkhoff•ARTICLE•The World Bank Economic Review•2017

In a meta-analysis of 126 impact evaluation studies, we find that financial education significantly impacts financial behavior and, to an even larger extent, financial literacy. These results also hold for the subsample of randomized experiments (RCTs). However, intervention impacts are highly heterogeneous: financial education is less effective for low-income clients as well as in low- and lower-middle–income economies. Specific behaviors, such …

  • Educational Transfers in Postcolonial Contexts: Preliminary Results From Comparative Research on Workers’ Faculties in Vietnam, Cuba, and Mozambique

Tim Kaiser, Tobias Kriele et al.•ARTICLE•European Education•2015•References: 16

Worker’s Faculties, which have been widespread in the Soviet Union up until 1941, combined the two goals of preparing adult workers and peasants for university entrance through the provision of general education, as well as creating a new socialist intelligentsia from among these groups. After World War II, Workers’ Faculties were also established in postcolonial countries. Based on case studies in Vietnam, Cuba, and Mozambique, we argue that cor…
