The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on social inequalities in international student mobility
This systematic literature review sheds light on social inequalities in students’ access to and experiences of international student mobility (ISM) in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. Following a scoping approach based on the 2020 PRISMA guidelines, it synthesises 48 empirical studies published in the most intense phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, namely between January 2020 and June 2022. The findings demonstrate that the social inequalities …

Education as an Opportunity for Integration
With over 5 million Venezuelans fleeing their home country, Latin America is facing the largest migration crisis in its history. Colombia, Peru, and Chile host the largest numbers of Venezuelan migrants in the region. Each country has responded differently to the crisis in terms of the provision of education. Venezuelan migrants attempting to enter the primary, secondary, and higher education systems encounter a variety of barriers, from struggle…

Comparing the Responses of US Higher Education Institutions to International and Undocumented Students in the Trump Era
Tensions over borders lie at the center of a growing global debate. But while politicians argue, some US higher education institutions (HEIs) have made education and protections possible for displaced students. Using securitization theory and social movement theory to examine the role of HEIs as they responded to immigration policies attempted by the Trump Administration, this article compares interventions in the United States for undocumented “…

Inequities of global mobility
This study explores socioeconomic stratification in the experiences and relationships that international students identify as meaningful during their university education. Researchers used interview data from 40 international students to explore the role of funding in the qualities of their academic experiences and the support networks they accessed during their university studies. The authors describe how well-financed, single-resourced students…

Competing Motivations in Germany’s Higher Education Response to the “Refugee Crisis”
In 2015–16 Germany was confronted with over 1 million new refugees, which challenged public and private institutions alike and increasingly divided public sentiments. This article investigates the cultural, political, and economic dynamics as they were in Germany in 2015–16 and in particular how its higher education sector responded. The discussion covers a comprehensive review of media debates, public and private institutional research, new Germ…
The Potential and Reality of New Refugees Entering German Higher Education
By the close of 2015, roughly 890,000 new refugees had arrived in Germany, more than half fleeing the ongoing Syrian Civil War. While Germany had been accustomed to heavy migration streams since the end of the Second World War, the speed of the refugee influx was unexpected. Federal, state, and municipal governments and German civil society, including educational institutions, were largely unprepared and scrambled to respond. This article critica…
Assessment Beyond Performance
Increasing calls for accountability in education have promoted improvements in quantitative evaluation approaches that measure student performance; however, this has often been to the detriment of qualitative approaches, reducing the richness of educational evaluation as an enterprise. In this article the authors assert that it is not merely performance but also how learners think and how their thinking changes that we should be measuring in educ…

Some Thoughts on Post-Reunification Pedagogical Adjustments
This paper emerged from research I conducted in June 1997 in former East Berlin. During this time I was given the opportunity to visit the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education to conduct research in Berlin. My principal goal during this time was very simple: to learn as much as possible about the experiences of East German teachers before, during, and after German reunification. The other goal was to develop a foundation of un…
