  • Examining institutional academic freedom and STEM research production in the OECD

    Open Access•F Fernandez, Yuan-Chih Fu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

  • Expecting to achieve against the odds

    Open Access•Volha Chykina•ARTICLE•European Journal of Education•2024

Scholars have identified many factors that lead to changes in anti‐immigrant sentiment. Less is known, however, about the effects of anti‐immigrant sentiment on the academic experiences and outcomes of immigrant students. This manuscript examines the relationship between anti‐immigrant sentiment and immigrants’ expectations to achieve a college degree and career success in Europe. Consistent with established literature on immigrant optimism, this…

  • Education and Public Support for Covid-19 Mitigation Measures

    Open Access•Volha Chykina, Charles Crabtree•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2023•References: 1

Governments around the world have adopted many mitigation strategies to stop the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Public support for these strategies varies widely. In this visualization the authors examine whether college education might play a role in support for various COVID-19 mitigation strategies. To do so, they leverage original data from surveys conducted across six countries. The authors find that the associat…

  • Pro-integration policies and the occupational expectations of immigrant youth

    Open Access•Volha Chykina•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023•References: 112

Europe is experiencing heightened public attention toward anti-immigration policy reforms and restrictions. Despite the potential importance of these policy changes, we do not know whether these policies influence how immigrant children perceive their futures in their host countries. Employing secondary data analysis of the Program for International Student Assessment and the Migrant Integration Policy Index data, I show that a decrease in policy…

  • Trying to excel in the Golden State

    Volha Chykina•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 34

Anti-immigrant hostility continues to rise throughout multicultural societies. Building on segmented assimilation theory, in this manuscript I examine whether anti-immigrant sentiment might decrease school performance of immigrant children using the case of California, the state with the largest population of immigrants in the United States. I find a negative association between an increase in anti-immigrant sentiment at the community level and a…

  • Do human and cultural capital lenses contribute to our understanding of academic success in Russia

Katerina Bodovski, Volha Chykina et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 38

Using newly available data from the Trajectories in Education and Careers Study, the first longitudinal study on a representative sample of high school students in Russia, we examined the importance of investments in human and cultural capital on students’ mathematics and reading standardized examinations, as well as on the likelihood of matriculation into a selective institution of higher education. Studying mathematics and the Russian language …

  • Educational Expectations of Immigrant Students

    Open Access•Volha Chykina•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 63

Immigrants are known to have high expectations to matriculate into college and achieve a college degree. Yet the majority of the studies that examine the educational expectations of immigrant youth focus only on one country. Furthermore, researchers have not yet examined whether the high educational expectations of immigrants are promoted or hampered by the characteristics of educational systems in immigrants' host countries. This paper examines …

  • Last Name Selection in Audit Studies

    Open Access•Charles Crabtree, Volha Chykina•ARTICLE•Sociological Science•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 11

In this article, we build on Gaddis (2017a) by illuminating a key variable plausibly related to racial perceptions of last names—geography. We show that the probability that any individual belongs to a race is conditional not only on their last name but also on surrounding racial demographics. Specifically, we demonstrate that the probability of a name denoting a race varies considerably across contexts, and this is more of a problem for some nam…

  • Using Google Trends to Measure Issue Salience for Hard-to-Survey Populations

    Open Access•Volha Chykina, Charles Crabtree•ARTICLE•Socius Sociological Research for…•2018•Cited by: 10•References: 2

Some populations are difficult to survey. This poses a problem for researchers who want to understand what issues matter to these populations and how the salience of those concerns varies over time. In this visualization article, the authors illustrate how Google Trends can be used to examine issue salience for hard-to-survey mass populations. Applying this method to immigrant concerns over deportation, the authors show that anxieties over remova…

  • Social network effects on academic achievement

    Open Access•Robert M Bond, Volha Chykina et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 13

How peer groups contribute to educational outcomes has long interested researchers. However, the possibility that peer groups dominated by either low- or high-achieving youth can have substantively different effects on achievement has been largely ignored. In this paper, we show that while being embedded in a high-achieving network of friends is not associated with increased own achievement, being embedded in a low-achieving network is associated…

  • Searching for the golden model of education

    Katerina Bodovski, Soo‐yong Byun et al.•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 17

We utilized four waves of TIMSS data in addition to the information we have collected on countries' educational systems to examine whether different degrees of standardization, differentiation, proportion of students in private schools and governmental spending on education influence students' math achievement, its variation and socioeconomic status (SES) gaps in math achievement. Findings : A higher level of standardization of educational system…

  • Global citizenship and the importance of education in a globally integrated world

    W C Smith, Pablo Fraser et al.•ARTICLE•Globalisation Societies and…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 15

As national borders dissipate and technology allows different cultures and nationalities to communicate on a regular basis, more individuals are self-identifying as a global citizen. Using Social Network Analysis and multi-level modelling, this study explores factors associated with global citizen affinity and finds that education plays an important, perhaps the most important, role in individual’s affinity towards this self-identification. Resul…

  • Great Expectations? Variation in Educational Plans of Students in Post-Socialist Eastern Europe

Volha Chykina, Hee Jin Chung et al.•ARTICLE•European Education•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 72

Using all available waves of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) from 1995 to 2011, this study examines the factors influencing educational expectations of students in five Eastern European countries (Hungary, Lithuania, the Russian Federation, Romania, and Slovenia). We consistently find across countries and waves that parental completion of a college degree, better material well-being of the family, and being a fem…
