  • We cannot repeat history again

Open Access•Kristy Crooks, Fatima Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2025

Indigenous communities worldwide continue to disproportionately bear the burden during pandemics due to ongoing health inequities and systemic exclusion from pandemic decision-making processes. As the global community prepares for the next pandemic, it is critical to prioritise Indigenous leadership and governance within public health responses. This commentary highlights successful models of Indigenous-led pandemic responses during COVID-19 in C…

  • The Association Between NRMN STAR Grantsmanship Self-Efficacy and Grant Submission

    Harlan P Jones, Jamboor K Vishwanatha et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2021

Our findings demonstrate that NRMN STAR had a positive impact on trainees' confidence in grant writing and professional development activities, which resulted in higher grant submission rates

  • The Impact of Grantsmanship Self-Efficacy on Early Stage Investigators of The National Research Mentoring Network Steps Toward Academic Research (NRMN STAR )

    Roland J Thorpe, Jr Roland J Thorpe et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2020

The NRMN STAR program was created to address the persistent underrepresentation in grant submissions and receipt of National Institutes of Health (NIH) awards by racial/ethnic minority groups. In our current study, we assessed program impact on trainees' self-efficacy related to grant writing. The program was conducted with two cohorts: one in June 2014 and one in June 2015. We used a 19-item grant writing self-efficacy scale drawn from the 88-it…

  • Exploring Professional Development for New Investigators Underrepresented in the Federally Funded Biomedical Research Workforce

Japera Hemming, Kristin Eide et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2019

Objective: The National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) is a strategic partnership whose goals include remedying documented disparities by race and ethnicity in the awarding of National Institutes of Health research grants. Our objectives were to offer a profile of early-career investigators who applied to NRMN’s Grantsmanship Coaching Programs (GCP) and test for differences in the research productivity, professional obligations, research r…

Japera Hemming, Kristin Eide et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2019

Our findings identified several points of intervention to help applicants from URGs to improve their future chances of obtaining competitive funding

  • Defining and Measuring Community Engagement and Community-Engaged Research

Milton Eder, Eunbyul Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Although definitions of community engagement differ among CTSAs, there seem to be more similarities than differences in the indicators and measures tracked and reported on across all definitions, perhaps owing to commonalities among program infrastructures and goals. Metrics will likely need to be specific to translational research stages. The assessment of community engagement within translational science will require increased institutional com…

  • Sampling hidden populations

    Eileen M Harwood, Keith J Horvath et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This paper describes a flexible, multi-stage, nonprobability sampling process used in a study of persons recently diagnosed as HIV-positive (PRDH). From July 2007 to June 2008, we used venue and chain-referral sampling strategies to recruit PRDH in the US. We sought equal distributions (n = 20) of eligible PRDH from four self-identified subgroups: gay or bisexual men (GBM), heterosexual men (HM), heterosexual women (HW), and male-tofemale transge…

  • Public Opinion in Puerto Rico on Alcohol Control Policies

    Open Access•Eileen M Harwood, Debra H Bernat et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 25

This article discusses the first study to assess public opinion of alcohol policies in Puerto Rico. In 2001, a telephone survey of 514 adults on the island assessed levels of support for 20 alcohol control policies covering five domains: (a) raising alcohol taxes, (b) restricting alcohol consumption in public places, (c) punishing adult providers of alcohol, (d) restricting youth access to alcohol, and (e) restricting marketing of alcohol. Result…

  • Liability of Commercial and Social Hosts for Alcohol-Related Injuries

    Alexander C Wagenaar, Charles E Denk et al.•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•2001•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Legal standards for liability of commercial sellers and social providers of alcoholic beverages are affected by social norms concerning accountability and responsibility. Using a nationwide probability sample telephone survey of 7,021 U.S. residents, we conducted a randomized experiment in which each subject was asked to respond to multiple vignettes. The vignettes told stories of drinking situations, systematically varying dimensions concerning …
