Doheung Lee, Heejung Jung et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2026

  • Changes in Interdependence, US-China Strategic Competition, and the New Dynamics of the East Asian Regional Order

    Seungjoo Lee•ARTICLE•Asian Journal of Peacebuilding•2022

The immediate cause of the East Asian states pursuit of new economic statecraft, which has led to changes in the regional order, was the rise of US-China strategic rivalry. However, one structural factor behind the adoption of this statecraft is the economic network formed in East Asia. The emergence of new economic statecraft has had systemic effects, such as the spread of network sanctions, the adoption of divergent strategies, and the dual dyn…

    Seungjoo Lee•ARTICLE•Asia Review•2022

  • Evolution of Korea’s Disaster-Management Diplomacy: Disaster Management as a Nexus between ODA Policy and Middle-Power Diplomacy

    Seungjoo Lee•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2021

Noting that the demand for overseas emergency relief increased, the Korean government ambitiously launched disaster-management diplomacy in the 2000s. This paper argues that the Korean government promoted disaster-management diplomacy in connection with other policies: the official development assistance (ODA) policy and middle-power diplomacy. First, disaster-management diplomacy emerged in the broader context of changes in ODA policy in Korea. …

    Seungjoo Lee•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2016•Cited by: 1

The dynamics of institutional balancing is the predominant factor prompting East Asian countries to move to mega-FTAs. Rather than seeking mega-FTAs purely on the basis of economic benefits, these countries, particularly major powers, have attempted to form mega-FTAs to counter the target state’s vision of the regional architecture

    Seungjoo Lee, Sang-Young Rhyu et al.•ARTICLE•The Pacific Review•2008•References: 9

Dense informal networks between public- and private-sector elites have long been identified as a key institutional feature that had underpinned rapid economic development in many East Asian countries. With the outbreak of the Asian financial crisis in 1997, however, a number of scholars have cast doubt on the long-term efficacy of informal networks, discrediting the East Asian model as crony capitalism. Although these debates renewed our interest…

  • The Presidency, Regionalism, and Distributive Politics in South Korea

    Open Access•Yusaku Horiuchi, Seungjoo Lee•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2008•Cited by: 27•References: 28

Although whether there is political influence on distributive policies is now indisputable, important debates have emerged about how politics distorts distributive policy outcomes. In this article, the authors improve the understanding of distributive politics by focusing on South Korea. They argue that because of Korea-specific institutional and cultural settings, an incumbent president allocates disproportionately larger amounts of pork-barrel …
