The Prevalence and Characteristics of Substance Abusers in a Child Protective Service Sample
The purpose of this research was to identify characteristics of substance abusers in a child protective services caseload. The random sample of 443 children was drawn from an urban county from all children with a substantiated abuse case. Files of children were reviewed to derive data. The objectives of this research were to analyze data from literature based on studies of battered women to determine (a) the correlation of domestic violence and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), (b) the best treatment strategies for PTSD, and (c) the evidence of PTSD treatment effectiveness with battered women. The objective of this study was to examine the differences between women with children in substance use treatment who are involved in Child Protective Services (CPS+) and those who are not involved (CPS-). Using a sample of all alcohol and other drug (AOD) clients (N = 6,023) receiving substance use treatment over a three-year period (1997-99), the study found that CPS+ women were more likely to be younger, have more children, have been arrested …
Using Tanf Sanctions to Increase High School Graduation
The School Attendance Demonstration Project (SADP) was aimed at encouraging AFDC teens to attend school and finish high school. The project used a combined approach of the financial incentive in the form of a penalty for non-attendance, and the provision of social services. Effect of Unemployment on Women
In the context of a four-month longitudinal investigation, the reactions of a small group of women to unemployment were compared with those of a larger group of men. The hypothesis that women would be less affected by the loss of their jobs was not supported. However, it was found that only the women who experienced financial distress or who exhibited a strong satisfaction with work were negatively affected, while the mere fact of being unemploye…
