Validation of self‐harm prediction models among formerly incarcerated individuals using health data
BACKGROUND: Individuals released from jail die by self‐harm at nearly nine times the rate of the general U.S. POPULATION: Most jails rely on traditional screening methods, such as brief self-report questionnaires, which are often inconsistently administered and have limited sensitivity and predictive accuracy. This highlights the urgent need for alternative self-harm risk identification methods during and after incarceration. OBJECTIVE: To evalua…
Feasibility of implementation of the zero suicide model in community-based organizations serving Afghan refugees resettled in Michigan
While the need for behavioral health services for refugee communities is recognized, challenges remain in the implementation of accessible, acceptable, and adaptable programs. Within Michigan, CBOs have developed strong relationships with refugees and asylum seekers resettled into the state. The current project was designed to build on these existing infrastructures within CBOs and determine the feasibility of integrating an evidence-based suicid…
The rapid shift to virtual mental health care
BACKGROUND: Given the low usage of virtual health care prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was unclear whether those living in rural locations would benefit from increased availability of virtual mental health care. The rapid transition to virtual services during the COVID-19 pandemic allowed for a unique opportunity to examine how the transition to virtual mental health care impacted psychotherapy disruption (i.e., 45+ days between appointments) …
Association Between Adverse Social Determinants of Health and Suicide Death
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) code prevalence among individuals who died by suicide and to examine associations between documented adverse SDoH and suicide. Utilizing Primary Care to Engage Patients on Opioids in a Psychological Intervention for Chronic Pain
INTRODUCTION: Given the risks of opioids for pain management, we need nonpharmacological interventions that patients will engage in and that can reduce opioid use. The purpose was to examine whether offering a psychological intervention in primary care can engage patients receiving opioids for pain management and to explore whether the intervention influences opioid use. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a pilot randomized controlled tria…
Suicide Deaths Before and During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 Pandemic
INTRODUCTION: With stressors that are often associated with suicide increasing during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there has been concern that suicide mortality rates may also be increasing. Our objective was to determine whether suicide mortality rates increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted an interrupted time-series study using data from January 2019 through December 2020 from 2 large integrated healt…
Near Real-time Surveillance for Consequences of Health Policies Using Sequential Analysis
BACKGROUND: New health policies may have intended and unintended consequences. Active surveillance of population-level data may provide initial signals of policy effects for further rigorous evaluation soon after policy implementation. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the utility of sequential analysis for prospectively assessing signals of health policy impacts. As a policy example, we studied the consequences of the widely publicized Food and Dr…

Racial/Ethnic Differences in Health Care Visits Made Before Suicide Attempt Across the United States
BACKGROUND: Suicide is a public health concern, but little is known about the patterns of health care visits made before a suicide attempt, and whether those patterns differ by race/ethnicity. OBJECTIVES: To examine racial/ethnic variation in the types of health care visits made before a suicide attempt, when those visits occur, and whether mental health or substance use diagnoses were documented. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective, longitudinal stud…
Examining the Relationship Between Depression and Asthma Exacerbations in a Prospective Follow-Up Study
BACKGROUND: Although depression has been linked with asthma, its relationship with asthma exacerbations, including emergency department (ED) visits and oral steroid (OS) use, has not been well documented. The aim is to investigate whether depression increases exacerbations among patients with asthma. METHOD: The study included 568 participants with asthma who were between 18 and 56 years old, were taking an inhaled corticosteroid, and participate…
Pilot Feasibility Study of a Brief, Tailored Mobile Health Intervention for Depression among Patients with Chronic Pain

The computer tablet intervention was delivered in a hospital clinic using a blended motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy approach. Individuals were at least age 18, and screened positive for depression during a visit for …
