Broadening the View of Workplace Ageism
The Role of Occupational Status in the Association Between Job Strain and Ambulatory Blood Pressure During Working and Nonworking Days
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine whether job strain is more strongly associated with higher ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) among blue-collar workers compared with white-collar workers, to examine whether this pattern generalizes across working and nonworking days and across sex, and to examine whether this pattern is accounted for by psychosocial factors or health behaviors during daily life. METHODS: A total of 480 hea…
Individual and work factors related to perceived work ability and labor force outcomes.
Perceived work ability refers to a worker's assessment of his or her ability to continue working in his or her job, given characteristics of the job along with his or her resources. Perceived work ability is a critical variable to study in the United States, given an aging workforce, trends to delay retirement, and U.S. policy considerations to delay the age at which full Social Security retirement benefits may be obtained. Based on the job deman…
Mental work demands, retirement, and longitudinal trajectories of cognitive functioning.

The Voices of Kentucky Employers
This study explored Kentucky employers’ preparedness for the aging workforce using focus groups and a survey. Although employers perceived many benefits of older workers, five key challenges of an aging workforce emerged: institutional knowledge loss, older workers’ dependent care commitments, health and safety problems, generation gaps, and lack of technical skills. The results also suggested potential solutions and organizational practices to a…
Personality Correlates of Confidence in One's Decisions
Taylor and Brown (1988) hypothesized that certain illusions, such as unrealistic optimism, are predictably associated with positive affect, social skills, and intellectual functioning. To test this hypothesis, we obtained data from 162 students who first filled out a questionnaire containing dispositional measures of affect, social skills, and approaches to problem solving; in a second session they completed three tasks requiring difficult decisi…
