  • Changes in the medical-seeking pattern and daily behavior of hematopoietic stem-cell transplant recipients during the Covid-19 epidemic

Open Access•Rong Xie, Yicheng Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2022

Background To curb the spread of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, the Chinese government shut down Wuhan city from January 23rd to April 8th, 2020. The COVID-19 epidemic not only leads to widespread illness but also affects the diagnosis and treatment of hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT) recipients. Objective To investigate the medical-seeking pattern and daily behavior changes in Hubei Province during the COVID-19 epidem…

  • Nutrition, bone mass, and subsequent risk of hip fracture in white women

Open Access•Zhiping Huang, John H Himes•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1998

The interrelationships between nutritional status, concurrent bone density, bone dimensions, and risk of subsequent hip fracture were investigated using data from the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and its three follow-up studies. A cohort of 890 White women aged 45 years or older who received nutritional and bone measurements in the baseline survey in 1971–75 were recontacted in 1982–84, 1986, and 1987. Height, weight, se…

  • Menarcheal status and bone development in Guatemalan girls

Open Access•John H Himes, Ralph M Chite et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1993

Premenarcheal and postmenarcheal girls of the same chronological ages (11.5–15.5 years) and from the same villages in Guatemala differ significantly in patterns and mean levels of several measures of bone development. Stature, metacarpal dimensions, bone mineral content and bone mineral density from single photon absorptiometry, and total alkaline phosphatase activity are significantly associated with menarcheal status. Controlling for chronologi…

  • Serum alkaline phosphatase activity and skeletal maturation in Guatemalan adolescents

Open Access•John H Himes, Zhiping Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

Serum alkaline phosphatase activity (AP), stature and Tanner-Whitehouse-2 RUS skeletal age (SA) were determined for 873 rural Guatemalan youth and young adults 11-25 years of age. Mean AP decreases systematically with chronological age (CA) in girls, while an adolescent increase in mean AP occurs at 14 years in boys. When mean AP is calculated within SA groups, clear adolescent increases are apparent in girls, peaking at 11 years SA, and at 14 ye…
