Shangri-La and the Imperial Imagination in James Hilton’s Lost Horizon
Since the publication of James Hilton's Lost Horizon (1933), Shangri-La has become a household term, applied to any peaceful idyll or retreat from the modern world. In the academic community, there is a growing consensus that Shangri-La is a purely unreal, imaginary place in the novel of a utopian genre. Nevertheless, how Shangri-La emerged and exists remains a mystery. Therefore, this essay explores how Hilton's Shangri-La came into being in two…
Epidemiology of multimorbidity associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in the United States, 1999–2018
During the 20-year survey period, there was a significant decrease in the overall prevalence of ASCVD. However, this reduction was primarily observed in individuals without dyslipidemia, DM, hypertension, asthma, COPD, and arthritis. Among populations with any of the evaluated chronic conditions, the prevalence of ASCVD remained unchanged. Most of ASCVD patients had four or more concurrent chronic conditions
A Corpus Study on the Difference of Turn-Taking in Online Audio, Online Video, and Face-to-Face Conversation
Daily conversation is usually face-to-face and characterized by rapid and fluent exchange of turns between interlocutors. With the need to communicate across long distances, advances in communication media, online audio communication, and online video communication have become convenient alternatives for an increasing number of people. However, the fluency of turn-taking may be influenced when people communicate using these different modes. In th…

Detection of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii by metagenomic next-generation sequencing in central nervous system infection after neurosurgery
Background Central nervous system (CNS) infection is one of the most serious complications after neurosurgery. Traditional clinical methods are difficult to diagnose the pathogen of intracranial infection. Due to recent advances in genomic approaches, especially sequencing technologies, metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has been applied in many research and clinical settings. Case presentation Here, we report a case of CNS infection w…
A practical tool to support ecosystem-based management in a river ecosystem
Ecosystem-based management (EBM) is widely applied in marine and coastal ecosystems. However, its implementation in river basins is limited. This limitation is attributed to the lack of practical tools, which combine the general principles of EBM and the unique features of river ecosystems, to provide information for policy-making. A method to support EBM in rivers is proposed in the present study. This method analyzes the ecosystem by quantifyin…

Measurements and Determinants of Multidimensional Poverty
Poverty is widely recognized as a multifaceted concept and has been extensively studied. However, less research has been conducted to explore multidimensional poverty in China. This article aims to investigate the measurements and determinants of multidimensional poverty in mountainous areas of Southeast China. The Alkire–Foster method and a logistic regression modeling technique are applied to examine multidimensional poverty and its determinant…
Spatial Patterns and Determinants of Village Abandonment in the Mountainous Areas of China
Primary causes of total hamlet abandonment for different types of hamlets in remote mountain areas of China
Determinants of Rural Poverty in Remote Mountains of Southeast China from the Household Perspective
Manifestations and patterns of village abandonment in mountains of China from a dynamic perspective
Developmental Neurotoxicity of Methamidophos in the Embryo-Larval Stages of Zebrafish
Methamidophos is a representative organophosphate insecticide. The knowledge of its developmental neurotoxicity is limited, especially for zebrafish in the early stages of their life. Four hour post-fertilization (hpf) zebrafish embryos were exposed to several environmentally relevant concentrations of methamidophos (0, 25, and 500 μg/L) for up to 72 hpf. Locomotor behavior was then studied in the zebrafish larvae at this timepoint. Acridine oran…
Environmental Exposure to Triclosan and Semen Quality
Triclosan (2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxy-diphenyl ether, TCS) is widely used in personal care, household, veterinary and industrial products. It was considered as a potential male reproductive toxicant in previous in vitro and in vivo studies. However, evidence from human studies is scarce. Our study aims to investigate the relationship between TCS exposure and semen quality. We measured urinary TCS concentrations in 471 men recruited from a male r…

Effects of Simulated Heat Waves on ApoE-/- Mice
The effects of simulated heat waves on body weight, body temperature, and biomarkers of cardiac function in ApoE-/- mice were investigated. Heat waves were simulated in a meteorological environment simulation chamber according to data from a heat wave that occurred in July 2001 in Nanjing, China. Eighteen ApoE-/- mice were divided into control group, heat wave group, and heat wave BH4 group. Mice in the heat wave and BH4 groups were exposed to si…
Prevalence and risk factors of childhood allergic diseases in eight metropolitan cities in China
There was apparent geographic variation of childhood allergies in China. Socio-environmental factors had strong impacts on the prevalence of childhood allergies; but these impacts differed across regions. Thus public health policies should specifically target at the local risk factors for each individual area
The Mechanism of Negative Numbers’ Spatial Representation
