  • Is Living Easier With Eyes Closed

    Open Access•Charlotte Wien•ARTICLE•European Review•2024•References: 1

Blind peer review has become the gold standard of many scholarly disciplines. However, this seems like a paradox since openness is deeply embedded in the DNA of research. Over the last 30 years changes in the managerial paradigms of academia have also induced so many changes in the ecosystem of scholarly communication that many scholars describe the present situation as a crisis. Therefore, in light of the availability of new technologies and the…

  • Quantitative quality

Open Access•Daniella Bayle Deutz, Thea Marie Drachen et al.•ARTICLE•Scientometrics•2021

Nations the world over are increasingly turning to quantitative performance-based metrics to evaluate the quality of research outputs, as these metrics are abundant and provide an easy measure of ranking research. In 2010, the Danish Ministry of Science and Higher Education followed this trend and began portioning out a percentage of the available research funding according to how many research outputs each Danish university produces. Not all res…

  • From Media Hype to Twitter Storm

Open Access•Charlotte Wien, Adam Auch et al.•BOOK•From Media Hype to Twitter Storm•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Racial hoaxes are becoming a popular discursive strategy to disguise racism, as well as a powerful means for triggering waves of fake news and outraged comments both on mainstream and social media. Built on grounds of plausibility and consistency with existing narratives, racial hoaxes may remain latent for a long time, and periodically emerge when negative stereotypes can be framed as actual news stories. Racial hoaxes have relevant political an…

  • Commentators on daily news or communicators of scholarly achievements? The role of researchers in Danish news media

    Open Access•Charlotte Wien•ARTICLE•Journalism•2013•Cited by: 14•References: 4

The objective of this article is to analyze the role played by researchers in news media. The method is a quantitative content analysis of 640 newspaper articles combined with two surveys: of journalists ( N = 362) and researchers ( N = 342) respectively. The conclusions are that researchers from the soft disciplines mainly contribute to hard news or background items, where their role is to comment on daily events as public experts. They do this …

  • Changing media representations of youth in the news – a content analysis of Danish newspapers 1953–2003

Klaus Levinsen, Charlotte Wien•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth Studies•2011•Cited by: 16•References: 6

Media plays an important role in shaping public perceptions of youth. Previous studies have shown consistently negative images of youth in news media through a heavy focus on crime, accidents, and moral decay. Most research in this area has only collected data over short timeframes, which makes it difficult to register possible changes in modes of representation. The present study has sought to overcome this short come by emphasizing long-term da…

  • Mediebilledet af dansk medieforskning [Media Images of Media Research in Denmark]

    Open Access•Charlotte Wien•ARTICLE•MedieKultur Journal of media and…•2009•References: 3

A strange relationship exists between media and journalism researchers and Danish journalists. The nature of the relationship might be described as mixed feelings based on a mutual lack of respect and knowledge between the two professions. The aim of this article is to explore this relationship. Using qualitative text analyses, I trace the media’s descriptions of research in media and journalism, and through the analyses discuss the conception an…

  • An Anatomy of Media Hypes

    Open Access•Charlotte Wien, Christian Elmelund-Præstekær•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•2009•Cited by: 32•References: 3

■Media hypes are a well known phenomenon. They occur on a regular basis and attract much media attention, but there is very little knowledge about them. This article supplements Vasterman's analysis of the phenomenon and presents new empirical evidence. Through a case study of five Danish media hypes occurring between 2000 and 2005, the article shows that not every event has the potential to trigger a media hype: it must, of course, satisfy the g…
