Voice Lessons
This paper reflects on the national referendum for an Indigenous Voice to Parliament that took place in Australia in mid-October 2023. At the time of writing, the aftershocks from the failure of the referendum to gain the necessary majorities were still being felt keenly by many of the Voice advocates and supporters. The hurt and grief of many First Nations people were shared by millions of non-Indigenous “Yes” voters, while much reckoning contin…

Down the methodological rabbit hole
This article, part of a larger study, began with an inquiry into the ways a small group of preteen boys and girls with diagnosed eating disorders discussed their ideas and attitudes about healthy bodies in individual interviews. Despite applying some of the usual analytic procedures, the data yielded little of significance in relation to body and health discourses, or to gender differences. We therefore wondered whether our underlying epistemolog…
Preteen Boys, Body Image, and Eating Disorders
In recent years, academic and public attention has increasingly focused on the issue of men's preoccupation with body image and the increasing incidence of eating disorders among men. Although most of this focus has been on young and adult males, media discourse has tended to extend explanations for men's aspirations for social body ideals to explanations for eating disorders in young boys. In this article, we take a critical look at the way the …
Australian mothers’ notions of risk and uncertainty in relation to their pre-teen children
In this article we examine the ways discourses of risk manifested and played out within and across two groups of Australian mothers living in two large urban centres in Australia: the first comprised of mothers who had a pre-teen child diagnosed with an eating disorder (n=13); the second of mothers who had a pre-teen child without the symptoms or diagnosis of an eating disorder (n=13). In 2011 and 2012, we conducted in-depth interviews with the m…

The Relationship between Identity Development and Self-Esteem during the Late Adolescent Years
The purpose of the two studies reported in this paper was to examine the relationship between identity and self-esteem development during the late adolescent years. Subjects in Study 1 completed the Inventory of Psychosocial Development and a semantic differential measure of four components of self-esteem. Using a backwards stepwise multiple regression procedure the IPD scales that were significant predictors of the self-esteem measures were iden…

Delegated legislation and the Standing Joint Committee on Regulations and Other Statutory Instruments
Since 1972 most orders‐in‐council, regulations and other statutory instruments of federal departments, boards, agencies and commissions stand referred to a permanent joint parliamentary committee. The committee's task is to scrutinize each instrument according to fifteen criteria it has established. Although the committee has no power to make departments change regulations, it can and does present reports to Parliament indicating which regulation…

Canadian Participation in Parliamentary Associations
A parliamentary association is an international body composed of persons who are members of a legislature in their own country, state, or province. Although such bodies are sometimes consultative assemblies established by treaty and having an organic link with an intergovernmental organization (the European Parliament for example), most associations are informal bodies with no status in international law. Canadian parliamentarians belong to six i…
