  • Counterinsurgency as an institution: Evidence from Turkey

Aysegul Aydin, Ayşegül Aydın et al.•ARTICLE•International Interactions•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 30

Are emergency zones effective counterinsurgency measures? In response to Kurdish rebellion, the Turkish state put 13 provinces under emergency rule (1987–2002). In this paper, we investigate the link between emergency rule and electoral support for a pro-insurgent party. First, using the first-differencing method, we show that the tenure of provinces under emergency rule contributes to the vote share of the pro-insurgent party. Second, we investi…

  • From elite circles to power networks: Turkish soccer clubs in a global age, 1903–2005

    Cem Emrence•ARTICLE•Soccer and Society•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Emerging as a key site of popular culture in contemporary Turkey, soccer occupies a prominent position in the everyday life of most Turkish citizens. This essay examines the evolution of Turkish soccer clubs in the last 100 years with reference to nationalist, populist and commercial forms of domination. Pursuing an historical analysis, the essay argues that the Turkish soccer clubs have had different modalities in each regime‐type that can be de…

  • Imperial paths, big comparisons: The late Ottoman Empire

    Open Access•Cem Emrence•ARTICLE•Journal of Global History•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 16

The main goals of this article are to review historiographical trends and set new directions for late Ottoman history. First, the paper demonstrates that current research on the late Ottoman Empire still operates within the confines of the centre–periphery model, and sustains dualistic and state-centred narratives. Second, I argue that a ‘historical trajectory’ framework is a better analytical tool and empirical strategy. It is spatial, path-depe…

  • After Neo-liberal Globalization: The Great Transformation of Turkey

    Cem Emrence•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2008•Cited by: 12

Pursuing a macro sociological approach, this contribution examines the great transformation of Turkey around rising market hegemony and increasing impact of global forces. Throughout the paper, I show how the new orientation is consolidating the power of globalist classes, creating conspicuous consumption as a marker of class distinctions, and prioritizing global networks over domestic structures at the expense of sustaining domestic inequalities…

  • Three Waves of Late Ottoman Historiography, 1950-2007

    Open Access•Cem Emrence•ARTICLE•Middle East Studies Association…•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Since the middle of the twentieth century there have been three waves of historiography on the late Ottoman world. Each rose to prominence in a different global setting, functioned as a broad intellectual orientation, and was replaced by another somewhat less hegemonic theoretical current after about two decades. The key differences between the three episodes are evident in terms of their thematic priorities, analytical frameworks, and the resear…

  • Politics of Discontent in the Midst of the Great Depression: The Free Republican Party of Turkey (1930)

    Open Access•Cem Emrence•ARTICLE•New Perspectives on Turkey•2000•Cited by: 11•References: 5

In the 1920s, Turkey was hard-pressed with difficulties on both the international and the domestic levels. The fledgling republic was isolated in international affairs, other than its friendship with the Soviet Union (Gürün 1991, pp. 103-32), and its borders were still far from being consolidated (Psomiades 1962, pp. 112-35; Newman 1927, pp. 81-83, 173-77). The Kurdish rebellions in the east, the top-down modernization efforts of the nationalists…
