  • Identifying the Greatest Earthquakes of the Past 2000 Years at the Nehalem River Estuary, Northern Oregon Coast, USA

    Open Access•Alan R Nelson, Andrea D Hawkes et al.•ARTICLE•Open Quaternary•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 64

We infer a history of three great megathrust earthquakes during the past 2000 years at the Nehalem River estuary based on the lateral extent of sharp (≤3 mm) peat-mud stratigraphic contacts in cores and outcrops, coseismic subsidence as interpreted from fossil diatom assemblages and reconstructed with foraminiferal assemblages using a Bayesian transfer function, and regional correlation of 14C-modeled ages for the times of subsidence. A subsidenc…

  • Logic and Knowledge

    Alan Nelson, Alan R Nelson•CHAPTER•Routledge Companion to…•2017

This chapter traces how Rene Descartes's distinctive and immeasurably influential theory of logic and knowledge grew in scope and sophistication as it came under increasing pressure from critics and from Descartes's own demands on it. The rationalist philosophers notably connected logic with metaphysical knowledge. The entire framework for knowledge set up in the Rules, on the hypothesis of maximal doubt, is regarded as no more than a strictly id…

  • A 600-year-long stratigraphic record of tsunamis in south-central Chile

    Open Access•Isabel Hong, Tina Dura et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•References: 3

The stratigraphy within coastal river valleys in south-central Chile clarifies and extends the region’s history of large, earthquakes and accompanying tsunamis. Our site at Quidico (38.1°S, 73.3°W) is located in an overlap zone between ruptures of magnitude 8–9 earthquakes in 1960 and 2010, and, therefore, records tsunamis originating from subduction-zone ruptures north and south of the city of Concepción. Hand-dug pits and cores in a 3-m-thick s…

  • Great earthquakes of variable magnitude at the Cascadia subduction zone

    Open Access•Alan R Nelson, Harvey M Kelsey et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

Comparison of histories of great earthquakes and accompanying tsunamis at eight coastal sites suggests plate-boundary ruptures of varying length, implying great earthquakes of variable magnitude at the Cascadia subduction zone. Inference of rupture length relies on degree of overlap on radiocarbon age ranges for earthquakes and tsunamis, and relative amounts of coseismic subsidence and heights of tsunamis. Written records of a tsunami in Japan pr…

  • Multiple sources for late-Holocene tsunamis at Discovery Bay, Washington State, USA

    Open Access•Harry Williams, Harry F L Williams et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Nine muddy sand beds interrupt a 2500-yr-old sequence of peat deposits beneath a tidal marsh at the head of Discovery Bay on the south shore of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. An inferred tsunami origin for the sand beds is assessed by means of six criteria. Although all the sand beds contain marine diatoms and almost all the beds display internal stratification, the areal extent of the oldest beds is too limited to confirm their origin a…

  • Seismic or hydrodynamic control of rapid late-Holocene sea-level rises in southern coastal Oregon, USA

    Open Access•Alan R Nelson, Yôko Ôta et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Intertidal stratigraphy has been instrumental in demonstrating the hazard posed by great earthquakes at the Cascadia subduction zone, but inferring an earthquake history from interbedded sequences of peat and mud is complicated by many factors that influence sedimentation and relative sea-level change on both tectonic and nontectonic coasts. Rapid-to-sudden rises in relative sea level marked by sharp contacts between intertidal peat and overlying…

  • Discordant 14 C Ages from Buried Tidal-Marsh Soils in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, Southern Oregon Coast

    Open Access•Alan R Nelson•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1992

Peaty, tidal-marsh soils interbedded with estuarine mud in late Holocene stratigraphic sequences near Coos Bay, Oregon, may have been submerged and buried during great ( M > 8) subduction earthquakes, smaller localized earthquakes, or by nontectonic processes. Radiocarbon dating might help distinguish among these alternatives by showing that soils at different sites were submerged at different times along this part of the Cascadia subduction zone…

  • Holocene coseismic and aseismic uplift of Isla Mocha, south-central Chile

    Open Access•Alan R Nelson, William F Manley•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1992

  • Fossil Invertebrate Evidence For Late Wisconsin Environments At The Lamb Spring Site, Colorado

    Scott A Elias, Alan R Nelson•ARTICLE•Plains Anthropologist•1989•References: 7

Interdisciplinary studies of Quaternary fossil groups strengthen the paleoenvironmental interpretations of archaeological sites. In this paper, we present the results of an investigation of an assemblage of these groups, recovered from late Wisconsin organic sediment from Lamb Spring, a multi-component archaeological site on the eastern edge of the Front Range, south of Denver, Colorado. The late Wisconsin insect fauna from the site includes 72 i…

  • Psychological equivalence: Awareness and response-ability in our nuclear age
