“Almost Too Late”
This article will assess the role of Canada’s Merchant Navy during the Second World War and appraise shifting government attitudes towards the civilian mariners in veterans’ legislation in the postwar period. By examining the factors that contributed to the civilian mariners’ initial exclusion as veterans, this study sheds light on the complex process whereby the state evaluates and then reassesses what is owed to those who serve. The redress cam…

Buddhism and Political Theory
This work provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of Buddhist political theory from the time of the Buddha to the present.
Buddhism, Mindfulness, and Transformative Politics
This article examines whether the American cultural phenomena of the practice of Buddhism or the Buddhism-derived technique of mindfulness are likely to be helpful to the political left. It summarizes the central teachings of the ancient Buddhist texts, with particular focus on the issues of mindfulness and politics. It also reviews the political history of Buddhist countries. The author argues that although modern Buddhism has shed its historica…
Political Theorists
The question of the role of normative or historical political theory within the broader discipline of political science has been controversial at least since the founding of the American Political Science Association (see Gunnell 2006 for a brief overview). Perhaps it goes without saying that during that same period people who think of themselves as engaged in political theory have disagreed among themselves about the core concerns of the field, …
Wittgenstein, value pluralism and politics
This article makes three main claims: (1) that the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein, properly understood, has no normative or political implications whatsoever; (2) that scholars with otherwise dramatically conflicting interpretations of Wittgenstein should nonetheless all agree with this conclusion; and (3) that understanding the (non-) implications of Wittgenstein’s philosophy helps to answer the two motivating questions of the literature on v…
Political Theory Today
This article reports the results of a 2008 national survey of political theorists. The results, based on 1,086 responses from professors at accredited, four-year colleges and universities in the United States, provide information about the demographic characteristics of political theorists, opinion data on the place of political theory within political science, the proportion of political theorists in political science departments, teaching loads…
Pluralism, Relativism, and Liberalism
One major focus of recent value-pluralist literature has been the question of what normative consequences follow from pluralism. This essay critically examines three arguments that attempt to show that either liberalism or a bounded modus vivendi is the state of affairs that pluralism makes morally preferable. All three arguments are shown to encounter the same fundamental problem—once we have agreed that values and sets of values are unrankable,…

The Politics of Wittgenstein The Grammar of Politics
Genealogies of the Event
Genealogies of Difference is an ambitious book, in which several agendas are at work.On one level, it is an investigation of the ancient and medieval roots of an important contemporary idea: that ineffable something (the negative, diffrance, the semiotic, the virtual, non-identity, the invisible, the unconscious)[1] that both makes possible and disrupts any scheme of identity and hierarchy.Widder adopts the Deleuzean language of the event to talk…
