  • Edmund Spenser's Stripping of the Altars: The Altar and Catholic Liturgy in The Faerie Queene

    Open Access•Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Renaissance Studies•2026

In his Faerie Queene , Edmund Spenser presents a sympathetic view of what broadly could be called Catholic liturgical piety, especially in his depictions of altars. In The Faerie Queene , Spenser is indeed averse to some of the pomp and circumstance associated with late Medieval and Early Modern liturgy that would be readily identifiable to Protestants as ‘Roman Catholic’ or ‘papist’. However, his condemnation of certain elements of Catholic litu…

  • Batman Begins , the Dark Knight Trilogy, and the Taming of the Orient

    Open Access•Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•The Journal of Popular Culture•2026•References: 1

Christoper Nolan's 2005 Batman Begins and the subsequent Dark Knight films (2008, 2012) represent a critical juncture in the history of twenty‐first century film, helping to inaugurate a twenty‐first neo‐noir and gritty realist trend. The films also deal with the thorny issue of Orientalism. Bruce Wayne receives a lot of his martial arts and philosophical training in the “Eurasian” East. However, this use of “Old World” ideas must be tamed by Wes…

  • Aquinas on Kinship and Caritas

    Open Access•Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•New Blackfriars•2022

Both within and without the Church, contemporary political discourse is haunted by the question of ethnicity and identity. Many thinkers further have sounded the death knell of the liberal world order, which promised the eventual abolition of ethnic ties and the coalescence of the brotherhood of humanity. At the same time, there is a rising tide of ‘ethnonationalism’, which (over-) emphasizes the importance of ethnic identity at the expense of re…

  • The Pope in Poland: The Pilgrimages of John Paul II, 1979–1991. By James Ramon Felak

    Open Access•Jesse Russell, Jesse B B Russell•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2022

On April 2, 2005, Pope John Paul II passed from this world to the next. His funeral at Vatican City was attended by a host of political and religious leaders—many of whom were, like John Paul himself, central figures of the post-Cold War world and the late twentieth century. Attendees included George H.W. Bush, a World War II veteran, who has been called the last of the old school “WASP” American presidents; his son, George W. Bush, the then-pres…

  • Defending the Status Quo in The Dark Knight Rises

    Open Access•Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•European Journal of American…•2022•References: 12

Although not as popular or groundbreaking as his Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan’s 2012 The Dark Knight Rises is an important cultural artefact of the twenty-first century. The film presents a number of villains who challenge the corrupt social order of Gotham City, which itself stands as a figure for twenty-first century American capitalism. Nonetheless, despite these criticisms, the film upholds American neoliberalism as the best of many flawed …

  • Edmund Spenser as Promethean poet: Critical issues and the role of magic and Platonism in The Faerie Queene

    Open Access•Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Cahiers Élisabéthains A Journal…•2021

One of the key points at which Platonism and magic or what could be called ‘Platonic magic’ is found in Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene is in his use of the image of the classical Titan Prometheus. Examining Spenser’s text in light of Renaissance Platonist Giovanni Pico della Mirandola’s writings on magic, we can see that Prometheus serves as a model for Spenser’s tremendous creative ability as a ‘poet magus’. However, an examination of the Promet…

  • Jewish Humanism in the Late Work of Geoffrey Hill

    Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Religion and the Arts•2021•References: 1

Throughout much of his career, Geoffrey Hill has been pilloried for his alleged conservativism as well as his positive treatment of Christianity in his poetry. A careful reading of his works, however, reveals a complex thinker who was attentive to the moral fallout of the Holocaust and the Second World War as he was a lover of England and European culture. Moreover, Hill’s writings reflect the apparent influence of a host of personalist, existent…

  • Whig Thomism” and the Making of the Catholic Neoconservative Movement

    Open Access•Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Politics and Religion•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

The writings of St. Thomas Aquinas, although widely noted for their clarity, are also rich and capacious enough to merit differing interpretations among scholars of good will and good faith. However, despite the noble intentions and praiseworthy work of the late Michael Novak and other Catholic neoconservatives, their marketing of St. Thomas Aquinas as the “first Whig” appears to sever elements of the Angelic Doctor's philosophy from its essentia…

  • Creating the Premodern in the Postmodern Classroom: Creativity in Early English Literature and History Courses

    Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Sixteenth Century Journal•2020

  • Spenser’s Sprites: Platonic Daemons in The Faerie Queene

    Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2020

Throughout the twentieth century, critics of the poet Edmund Spenser wrestled with the question of the presence of Plato as well as Platonic thought in Spenser’s works. Having recently established the profound presence of Platonism in Spenser via Marsilio Ficino and other sources, the field of Spenser studies is now open to a treatment of exactly what kind of Platonism is present in Spenser. Drawing from the work done by researchers in the field …

  • The Catholic Neoconservatives at War: The Battle for Control of Catholic Just War Teaching in America

    Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Politics Religion & Ideology•2020

There has been a small but very powerful and influential group of American Catholics who advocated for frequent America intervention around the world during the Cold War and now during the nearly twenty year long War on Terror. This group, which has proudly adopted the label ‘neoconservative’, wielded tremendous influence upon American conservative Catholic perceptions of economics, theology, sexual morality, and a host of other fields throughout…

  • Geoffrey Hill’s Poetic Incarnational Theology

    Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Religion and the Arts•2020

Geoffrey Hill’s poems are saturated with the cluttered bleakness of the nihilistic view of the natural world, but in Hill’s own Christian incarnational theology it is precisely this filthy world into which Christ was incarnated in order to redeem humans from Original Sin. Fortified with but also rattled by the Incarnation and the doctrine of Original Sin, in his poems Hill is faced with the profound, agonizing existential choice to embrace Christ…

  • The Catholic Neoconservative Misreading of John Paul II's Centesimus Annus Revisited

    Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Political Theology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 7

In the twilight of the twentieth and beginning of the twenty-first century, Catholic theologians and journalists who identified as members of the neoconservative political movement crafted a narrative of John Paul II's encyclical Centesimus Annus as a representing a sea-change in Catholic social teaching. In this neoconservative reading, the Catholic Church embraced a specifically American style of late twentieth century laissez-faire capitalism.…

  • The Neoconservatives and the Pope: Misreading John Paul II in George Weigel's Biographies

    Jesse Russell, Jesse B B Russell•ARTICLE•Political Theology•2018•References: 7

With the recent release of his autobiographical narrative of the composition of the papal biography, Witness to Hope, prominent Catholic neoconservative George Weigel has invited a reexamination of the presentation of John Paul II to the world by Catholic neoconservatives. In his biographies, George Weigel crafts an often misleading portrait of Pope John Paul II as the pope of American liberalism and neoconservativism. Ironically, at the same tim…

  • Child Welfare Finance and Foster Care Outcomes

Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Child Welfare•2015•Cited by: 4

This article explores the association between state-level child welfare expenditures and state-level foster care outcomes (placements, lengths of stay, and reentries). Spending for each state was differentiated among federal, state, and local levels, using data from 2006 across all 50 states in the United States plus Washington, DC. The analysis found that expenditures did not consistently correspond to outcomes. For spending to be effective in h…

  • Trading sovereignty for stability? The political economy of monetary integration

    Open Access•Jesse Russell•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2011•References: 18

How do states attempt to mitigate the pressures of financial globalisation? This article suggests that options can be understood in terms of monetary regime choice. These are best understood with their international component included – whether states integrate unilaterally, integrate multilaterally, or go it alone monetarily. But to understand the international side of monetary relations, one must look to domestic political structures, histories…
