Fostering interdisciplinarity and collaboration
This paper explores the innovative dynamics established through the European Universities Initiative (EUI) and their role in steering collaborative, challenge-driven research with societal impact. The EUI fosters the creation of university alliances aimed at aligning education and research with societal needs within the European Research Area. These alliances are designed to enhance transnational cooperation, particularly via developing common sc…
Mismatches between the current marine Natura 2000 network and seabird distributions call for enhanced protected areas off metropolitan France
Seabirds are among the most threatened vertebrates, under pressure from fisheries bycatch, climate change, overfishing, and human disturbance. In France, demographic studies have highlighted adult survival as a key factor in population trends, which calls for large-scale marine conservation efforts. In this context, the Natura 2000 policy requires the designation of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) to protect seabirds under the Birds Directive. To…
Wage Cyclicality and Labor Market Institutions
Do labor institutions influence how wages respond to the business cycle? Such responsiveness can then shape several economic outcomes, including unemployment. In this paper, we examine the role of two key labor market institutions—collective bargaining and temporary contracts—upon wage cyclicality. Our evidence is drawn from rich, 2002–2020 matched data from Portugal. We find that workers not covered by collective agreements exhibit much higher w…
Regional intergenerational mobility in Ecuador
We analyse the regional differences in eight measures of intergenerational mobility across cantons in Ecuador. Within-country estimates show heterogeneity with lands of opportunity, such as the Galápagos, and areas where poverty traps prevail, namely the Central Andes. This study also finds that better opportunities for children are associated with locations that have higher levels of migration, schooling, agriculture, family self-employment and …
Is multidimensional precarious employment higher for women
This article examines the relative employment situation of female employees from a novel perspective based on the construction of multidimensional indicators of employment precariousness that allow examining its scale and nature. The evidence obtained for Spain shows that both the intensity and incidence of precarious employment are significantly higher for women, to the point that half of the women are multidimensionally precarious (with an inci…
Wage flexibility and employment resilience in the Spanish labour market over the Great Recession
The Spanish economy is characterized by significant and persistent regional disparities. The Great Recession caused a severe economic downturn, marked by declining wages and rising unemployment, influenced by the internal wage devaluation policies. We investigate the relationship between wage flexibility and regional labour market resilience. We estimate a spatial panel wage curve using microdata from social security records for the period 2002–1…

The union wage premium in a segmented labor market
Korea’s labor market is highly dualized. Non-regular workers are subject to adverse labor conditions, and unions, controlled by regular workers, usually restrict their entry as allowed by Korean regulations. Our objective is to analyze the union wage gap in Korea considering this institutional setting. In particular, we examine union wage effects using a more recent and richer dataset than previous studies, the Economically Active Population Surv…
Physicians’ brain drain - a gravity model of migration flows
BACKGROUND: The past two decades have been marked by impressive growth in the migration of medical doctors. The medical profession is among the most mobile of highly skilled professions, particularly in Europe, and is also the sector that experiences the most serious labour shortages. However, surprisingly little is known about how medical doctors choose their destinations. In addition, the literature is scarce on the factors determining the shar…

The short-run relationship between inequality and growth
This paper provides evidence on the relationship between income inequality and economic growth in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) regions during the decade 2003–13. It combines household survey data and macroeconomic databases, covering over 200 comparable regions in 15 OECD countries. The econometric results, based on two alternative sets of instruments, highlight a general negative association between inequalities …
A Gravity Model of Migration Between the ENC and the EU
Due to its ageing population and low birth rates, the European Union (EU) will need to import foreign labour in the next decades. In this context, the EU neighbouring countries (ENC) are the main countries of origin and transit of legal and irregular migration towards Europe. Their economic, cultural, and historical links also make them an important potential source of labour. The objective of this paper is to analyse past and future trends in EN…
Regional Differences in the Gender Wage Gap in Spain
Overeducation, Skills and Wage Penalty
The literature on educational mismatches finds that overeducated workers suffer a wage penalty compared with properly educated workers with the same level of education. Recent literature also suggests that individuals’ skill heterogeneity could explain wage differences between overeducated and properly matched workers. The hypothesis is that overeducated workers earn less due to their lower competences and skills in relative terms. However, that …

Overeducation and Local Labour Markets in S pain
The objective of this paper is to analyse the influence of individual variables and some spatial mobility characteristics of regional labour markets on overeducation in Spain. To achieve this aim, we use microdata from the Spanish Budget Household Survey to estimate a probit model for the probability of overeducation while accounting for sample selection and the presence of data at different levels (individuals and territory). The obtained result…

This article analyses the link between human capital and regional economic growth in the European Union. Using various indicators of human capital calculated from census microdata, it is concluded that the recent economic performance of European regions is associated with an increase in over-education. Meta-Analysis on Microeconomic Wage Flexibility (Wage Curve)
Since the publication of the book by Blanchflower and Oswald in 1994, a growing literature has focused on the analysis of the wage curve, an empirical relationship between individual wages and regional unemployment. The most relevant conclusion of these studies is that there is a negative relationship between the two variables with a common elasticity across countries, which is close to −0.10. In this paper, we apply descriptive meta-analytical t…
Local Human Capital and Productivity
Sanromá E. and Ramos R. (2007) Local human capital and productivity: an analysis for the Spanish regions, Regional Studies 41, 349–359. This paper examines the relationship between the stock of human capital and productivity in the Spanish regions (NUTS III), and assesses whether the transmission channel involves external economies. The empirical evidence points to a positive relationship between the two variables, although it cannot be explained…
