Self-Authoring an Open Textbook for General Anthropology
Students in higher education are facing challenges with paying for their education. Cost of course materials, primarily textbooks, continues to be a financial concern. As a result, students often delay or simply do not purchase the materials they need to perform well in courses. Beginning With El Barrio
This study draws from data collected through phenomenological interviews with a group of urban teachers identified as “exemplary” by Latino students, parents, and community members. The authors critically examine the participants' biographies and document factors they cited as most germane and influential to informing their practice with Latino students. The article concludes with a discussion of barrio-based epistemologies and ontologies, or way…
Redirecting the teacher's gaze
Real Brothers, Real Sisters
This article reports the findings of a qualitative study of twelve non-adopted White siblings of transracial adoptees. It discusses various responses among White siblings to the adoption of children of color by their White biological parents. Drawing on sociolinguistic understandings of social practices and identities as enacted through constitutive discourses, the study paid particular attention to the ways study participants engaged with the di…
Transracialized selves and the emergence of post‐white teacher identities
This article draws on two previous studies by the authors, both based on interviews with European‐American individuals, to document white experiences with multiculturalism, race, and cultural differences. We consider recent developments in research on whiteness and offer a perspective on racial identities defined as discursively enacted identifications that are rooted in racialized discourse communities. We provide profiles of two white women who…
