Toward Sociology of Metaethics
Experimental philosophers have been long addressing the problem of folk metaethics, that is, laypeople's ideas about the nature of moral judgments, focusing especially on the question of whether such judgments are believed to represent some objective truth. While the results of their experiments, mostly conducted on small Western samples, suggest that certain personal and social factors might affect people's perception of moral claims as more or …

The New Sociology of Morality
This article presents analysis of the prospects for the development of the new sociology of morality in the context of ongoing efforts to institutionalize this area of research. In order to assess and generally classify the theoretical and empirical research that has been conducted as part of this project so far, as well as to determine the possible and potentially promising directions for its further evolution, the author identifies two compleme…
Sociology of values or sociology of morality
Values and morality are the key concepts sociologists have been using to emphasize the normative dimension of social behavior since the very dawn of our discipline. Yet, while one can find two modern traditions of research concentrated around the concepts of values and morality in sociology, the strict relations between them are rarely explicitly addressed. In this article, we aim to analyze the concepts of values and morality as used in sociolog…
Formation of the borders of Kazakhstan
The issues of the formation of the administrative borders of Kazakhstan with the republics of Central Asia and the RSFSR are considered within the frame of rapidly changing military and socio-political situation. Priorities in the delimitation, taking into account the size of territories, population and education status, are identified. Attention is drawn to the relationship of the national republics with the union bodies, neighboring autonomies,…
Weighing the moral worth of altruistic actions
In this article, we consider the problem of a discrepancy between, on the one hand, lay prescriptive judgments on the necessity of altruistic actions and, on the other, attributing moral worth to these actions. Based on Kantian theory of morality, we hypothesized that lay attributions of the moral worth of altruistic actions would be inversely related to normative ought-judgments according to which these actions should be performed, as having pos…
The Problem of Moral Agency
In the context of developing a new sociology of morality, the article examines such phenomena as moral agency and moral patiency, understood as an actor’s attributed ability to be seen as a subject or object of morally relevant actions. The authors analyze the concept of the “moral dyad” as the most popular general approach that addresses various aspects of attributing moral agency and patiency through mind ascription. We also examine the four ke…

Link of the Value Attitudes with Career Achievements (Based on a Survey of Youth)
The present study investigated the effects of basic value orientations on career success among young Russians. Taking into account the motivational nature of values and value congruence effect, we proposed that individuals emphasizing value orientations which prioritize work-related goals (“reputation and power”) would occupy a higher position on a career ladder. At the same time, we expected that value orientation bringing to focus other life do…
Rediscovering the Moral
This article examines the relationships between the sociology of morality and behavioural sciences. It is argued that, although the classical sociological tradition provides valuable theoretical resources for understanding moral phenomena, the prevalence of behavioural sciences in the field is problematic for the ‘new’ sociology of morality, particularly given a wider naturalist movement represented by some modern social theorists. In the context…
The Concept of Moral Conscience in the Sociological Tradition
In this article the author presents a historical and theoretical analysis of the concept of moral conscience in the sociological tradition, as well as analysis of the most important approaches to studying moral conscience in modern social and cognitive psychology. The crucial classical sociological concepts of moral conscience by Herbert Spencer and Emile Durkheim are analyzed in a comparative perspective as examples of utilitarian and social rea…
Altruism
Since coined by Comte, altruism has become one of the most controversial concepts in social and behavioral sciences, although altruistic behavior and related topics have been successfully studied within a number of fields. Oddly, while the theme of altruism was of primary significance in classical sociology of morality, modern sociology seems to have relatively little interest in studying altruism and altruistic behavior (although there are some …
