  • Subtle Leadership: How Individual and Collective Consciousness Intertwine to Create Change

    Open Access•Terence Sexton, Joan Walton•ARTICLE•Action Research•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 2

As society tackles the root causes of the meta-crisis, the development of our internal dimensions presents deep leverage points for outer change. While the concept of consciousness remains contested and lacks a universally accepted definition, it may be broadly understood to encompass the full spectrum of inner human dimensions. To address the complex challenges of global sustainability, society will need a myriad of leaders with the advanced mea…

  • Consciousness education: Why an enquiry into consciousness is an educational and spiritual imperative

Open Access•Laurel Waterman, Joan Walton•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of…•2024

In this paper, we present a case for including consciousness studies within the educational curriculum from early years through to postcompulsory education. We contend that its current exclusion is due to the deep embeddedness in society of the materialist assumption that the brain produces consciousness. Hence, as a subject of study, consciousness is considered only of relevance to neuroscientists. Informed by this same assumption, notions of sp…

  • Unlocking education through relationship building: Identity and agency in English educational institutions during Covid‐19

    Open Access•Linda Walz, C Haines Lyons et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2023•References: 37

This paper reports on a longitudinal study in the North of England with 13 educators in schools, colleges and universities during two lockdowns. The project was designed to ‘unlock’ education by providing spaces to co‐create new ways of thinking about education in light of the Covid‐19 pandemic. Focus groups were conducted with school and college teachers as well as university staff at the end of the first and second English lockdowns, in summer …

  • The study of spirituality and consciousness through Bohm Dialogue

Joan Walton•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of…•2022

The International Network for the Study of Spirituality (INSS) has recently established a Spirituality and Consciousness Studies Special Interest Group (SaCs SIG), using Bohm Dialogue as the method for gaining knowledge and awareness. This article presents an overview of the rationale for the formation of the group. It explores the potential connections between spirituality and consciousness, and what might be gained by enquiring into the nature …

  • Social justice and action research: Can we collaboratively create a new social movement with social justice at the centre

    Open Access•Joan Walton•ARTICLE•Educational Action Research•2021

Ideas about social justice are influenced by the ontological and epistemological assumptions of the worldview in which they are located. Since the seventeenth century, the dominant worldview in the western hemisphere has been shaped by the separatist and deterministic principles of classical Newtonian science. During the twentieth century, with the advent of quantum physics, these principles have been contested from within science itself, indicat…

  • The significance of consciousness studies and quantum physics for researching spirituality

Joan Walton•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of…•2017

The purpose of this paper is to argue that researchers interested in studying spirituality may benefit from paying attention to the phenomenon of consciousness. Despite consciousness being integral to human experience, it is largely ignored in research into spirituality. Yet there is evidence to suggest that the study of spirituality, and explorations of consciousness, have much to offer each other. My contention is that the subject of consciousn…
