Ethics in archaeobotany: Identifying current issues and initiating a declaration of principles
This article presents the first systematic assessment of ethical concerns specific to archaeobotanical research, focusing on principles and values. Conducted by an international group of archaeobotanists, the study used an anonymous online survey to document experiences and perceptions within the archaeobotanical community with the aim of raising awareness, identifying prevalent good practices and noting points for improvement. The questionnaire …

Fragments of Trade and Consumption: Plant Macroremains from the Boa Vista Ships in Lisbon
Archaeological interventions along Lisbon's riverside have revealed critical insights into the city's transformation from a maritime beach to an industrialized port zone. Excavations at the former Praia da Boa Vista revealed three ships (Boa Vista 1, 2, and 5), probably abandoned on the old Boa Vista beach between the last half of the seventeenth century and first half of the eighteenth century. These contexts, linked to the Atlantic trade and in…
The Roman military origins of the Via XVII reaffirmed by the Alto de Espinho Roman camp (Northwest Iberia)
Via XVII, a strategic Roman road linking Bracara Augusta, Aquae Flaviae, and Asturica Augusta in Northwest Iberia, is traditionally dated to the Augustan period. While it has been generally assumed that major roads were constructed by the army during the Principate, the direct role of the Roman military in their creation remains a specific point of inquiry. This paper explores new evidence from the Roman camp of Alto de Espinho (Montalegre, Portu…
Challenges and recent advances in archaeological charcoal research
Over the centuries: Long-term crop selection and diversity at Freixo/Tongobriga (Northwest Iberia)
Abstrac: Freixo/Tongobriga (Marco de Canaveses, Northwest Portugal) is an archaeological site on a vast hill near the Tâmega and Douro rivers. It was an important Roman city, well-known for its monumental buildings (e.g. Forum, Baths). Nonetheless, excavations have shown that the area was occupied for a longer time span. In this paper, archaeobotanical results from two areas will be addressed – Wall and Housing Complex I – comprising three contex…

Environmental changes and historical occupation at Oued Laksar (Ksar Seghir), Morocco
Laksar is a small river near the village of Ksar Seghir, located between Tangier and Ceuta (Morocco), strategic points to control the Strait of Gibraltar over centuries. The river outlets at the western part of a sandy beach that can block the fluvial discharge in years of low precipitation/river flow. The area is densely occupied since the 5th century BC, during the roman period and Early Middle Age in the archaeological site of Dhar d’Aseqfane,…
Roman-indigenous interaction in the Salas River valley (Northwest Iberia): The Roman camp of Alto da Raia and its archaeological landscape
This paper discusses the archaeological research and historical contextualisation of the Alto da Raia enclosure located on the border between northern Portugal and Galicia, identified as a possible Roman camp, following an interdisciplinary and multi-proxy approach. This included archaeological excavation, remote sensing and geophysical survey, as well as sample collection for archaeobotanical and geochemical studies by means of chemical and mine…
Archaeobotanical data from the Sabor Valley reveal shifting moments in landscape and agriculture in NW Iberia during the Holocene
NW Iberia is dominated by Atlantic climate areas that favour pollen preservation, useful for palaeoecological studies. However, the region also includes Mediterranean sectors in which preservation of such palaeoenvironmental evidence is more difficult. To overcome these constraints, archaeological plant macroremains can be used to help characterize flora and vegetation dynamics at a local and regional level. To fill the gap in knowledge in an und…

Crops on the edge of a cliff: Storage at Castro S. João das Arribas (Northwest Iberia) in the Late Antiquity
The site of Castro S. João das Arribas is placed on the edge of a cliff over the Douro river (Miranda do Douro, Northeast of Portugal). Archaeological interventions in its highest area uncovered a main occupation from Late Antiquity. On its western part a functional space was recorded, which included two small above-ground structures and abundant charred carpological remains. These were found inside ceramic vessels and spread throughout the area,…
First Direct Evidence of Agrarian Practices in the Alava Plateau (Northern Iberia) During the Middle Ages Through Carbon and Nitrogen Stable Isotope Analyses of Charred Seeds
This paper presents the results of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses on 50 charred seed samples from the medieval villages of Zornoztegi and Aistra, dated to between fourth and fourteenth centuries CE. The assemblage was mainly formed by Triticum aestivum/durum, although some Hordeum vulgare, Avena and Vicia ervilia samples were also included. Despite the social and political differences between the sites, no big contrasts were found be…

Archaeology of the Pleistocene-Holocene transition in Portugal: Synthesis and prospects
The Tardiglacial of Portugal has been associated with the Magdalenian culture and lithic industries characterized by tool miniaturization, a diversity of microlith types, and the absence of a intentional blade production. The technological characterization, the chronology and the phasing of the Portuguese Magdalenian have been defined based on data recovered from open-air sites of the Estremadura region (Central Portugal). This paper presents an …

Fruits and seeds from an Iron Age ritual of commensality in Frijão (Braga, NW Portugal)
Frijão is a peculiar Iron Age place in Northwest Portugal. Its peculiarity derives mostly from what appears to be the remains of a ritual of commensality found in a pit or ditch.Structures in Frijão were exclusively made of perishable materials. These were destroyed by an apparently man-made and ritual fire that appears to be articulated with a riveted cauldron. In the main structure of the site – a large pit or ditch – several ceramic vessels of…

Agriculture in NW Iberia during the Bronze Age: A review of archaeobotanical data
The wide and diverse array of palaeoenvironmental studies that were carried out in Northwestern Iberia indicate that the Bronze Age corresponds to a phase of great landscape changes. Strong deforestation and erosion episodes are key-features and they are usually assumed to be anthropogenic. The archaeological and archaeobotanical records demonstrate that these trends are coincident with modifications on settlement pattern and agricultural systems…
