  • Decolonising the religious education curriculum

Liam Gearon, Arniika Kuusisto et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Religious…•2021

(2021). Decolonising the religious education curriculum. British Journal of Religious Education: Vol. 43, Decolonising the Religious Education Curriculum: International Perspectives in Theory, Research, and Practice, pp. 1-8

  • Reading posthumanism and decolonisation diffractively towards (re)configuring an ontoepistemic approach to religion education

Petro Du Preez, Shan Simmond et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Religious…•2021

Student-teachers are exposed to different approaches to teaching Religion Education in South Africa. Amongst these have been the phenomenological-reflective-dialogical approach of Cornelia Roux and the empathetic-reflective-dialogical approach of Janet Jarvis. These different approaches made immeasurable contributions as they started to shift how Religion Education has been taught. The approaches are both informed by a social constructivist metho…

  • Reflections on Life Design Narrative Inquiry as a Methodology for Research With Child Sex Trafficking Survivors

Open Access•Anja Visser, Petro Du Preez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 30

At present, there is a dearth of primary data on the experiences of the child survivors of trafficking for sexual exploitation. Qualitative research methodologies are needed to help researchers and practitioners from a variety of disciplines to understand the complex issues associated with child sex trafficking (CST), to gain greater insight into the nature of this problem, and to devise strategies to combat this form of trafficking. In this arti…

  • Teachers as curriculum leaders

    Open Access•Shan Simmond, Shan Simmonds•ARTICLE•Educational Research for Social…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Curriculum is a site of political, racial, gendered, and theological dispute. Teachers who acknowledge this and see the implications for democratic living embrace their teaching practice as curriculum leaders and participate in complicated conversations. With the focus on gender equity as a democratic ideal, this article explores the lived experiences of some South African female teachers. From the findings, it became evident that some teachers s…

  • Human rights

Annamagriet De Wet, Jacques Rothmann et al.•ARTICLE•Society in Transition•2016

In this article we problematise the fact that human rights legislation, whether intentionally or otherwise, reinforces binary categories such as ‘heterosexual’ or ‘homosexual’. This form of ‘othering’ highlights the incongruence between what the legislation offers and sexual minorities’ lived experiences. We argue that human rights thus constitute a double-edged sword that may discourage ‘coming out’. Our critique of human rights is based on the …

  • Othering’ non-normative sexualities through objectification of ‘the homosexual’

Jacques Rothmann, Shan Simmond et al.•ARTICLE•Agenda•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 13

Heterosexuality is associated with normative, ‘normal’ or ‘natural’ social and sexual relations. Concomitantly, those who do not conform to heterosexual standards are ‘othered’. Conforming to normativity creates the “heterosexual imaginary” (Ingraham, 1996) and perpetuates heteronormativity. This article focuses on the dangers of institutionalised heterosexuality, particularly the objectifying of non-normative sexual and gender diversities as ant…

  • Blurring the Boundaries between Photovoice and Narrative Inquiry

    Open Access•Shan Simmond, Cornelia Roux et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2015•Cited by: 15•References: 27

Photovoice provides alternative ways of doing research with schoolgirls, who are vulnerable and often under-acknowledged research participants. It is particularly valuable in dealing with sensitive topics such as gender-based violence, poverty and HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. Photovoice is thus widely employed in disciplines such as health, education, economics, sociology, anthropology, and geography. Up until now, however, it has been p…

  • Curriculum-making in South Africa

    Shan Simmond, Shan Simmonds•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2014•References: 5

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals (2000−2015) are clearly embedded in South Africa's education policy documents. However, they are not adequately infused into the curriculum. This article focuses specifically on the third Millennium Development Goal (MDG) − promoting gender equality and empowering women − and the need to place this curriculum content at the centre and not on the periphery, to achieve its goal. Qualitative document r…

  • Girls' and boys' reasoning on cultural and religious practices

Annamagriet De Wet, Cornelia Roux et al.•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Human rights play a vital role in citizens' political, religious and cultural life (Wang 2002, 171). Due to the prominence of human rights in the everyday life of citizens, including those of South Africa, human rights education has been included in many school curricula. Human rights education aims to develop responsible citizens who inter alia foster an understanding of gender, ethnical, religious and cultural diversities. This, it is hoped wil…
