  • A New Inventory and Conservation Assessment of United States Islands

    Open Access•Robert Sayre, Roger W Sayre et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2026•References: 28

To support conservation-focused research and management we developed a new 30-m resolution polygon data layer of the nonlacustrine and nonriverine islands of the United States, with associated attributes describing key physical and conservation geography characteristics. Islands were grouped into a three-tiered hierarchy of island regions (twelve), island provinces (twenty-eight), and individual islands (19,023). Islands were classified as either…

  • Named Landforms of the World: A Geomorphological and Physiographic Compilation

Open Access•Charlie Frye, Robert Sayre et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of the American…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 25

Prior to the current era of digital geomorphological mapping, global and regional-scale land surface characterization was advanced by qualitative interpretations that relied on human visualization aided by disciplinary knowledge of geophysical processes combined with extensive field study. In the early twentieth century, Fenneman proposed to devise systematic physiographic divisions of the United States and in 1916 produced what is still regarded…

  • A multidisciplinary framework to derive global river reach classifications at high spatial resolution

Open Access•Camille Ouellet Dallaire, Bernhard Lehner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

Projected climate and environmental change are expected to increase the pressure on global freshwater resources. To prepare for and cope with the related risks, stakeholders need to devise plans for sustainable management of river systems, which in turn requires the identification of management-appropriate operational units, such as groups of rivers that share similar environmental and biological characteristics. Ideally, these units are of a man…

  • Monitoring Mountains in a Changing World: New Horizons for the Global Network for Observations and Information on Mountain Environments (GEO-GNOME)

Open Access•Carolyn Adler, Carolina Adler et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2018

Mountains are globally distributed environments that provide significant societal benefits, a function that is increasingly compromised by climatic change, environmental stress, political and socioeconomic transformations, and unsustainable use of natural resources. Gaps in our understanding of these processes and their interactions limit our capacity to inform decisions, where both generalities of mountain regions (eg climate processes) and spec…

  • A New High-Resolution Map of World Mountains and an Online Tool for Visualizing and Comparing Characterizations of Global Mountain Distributions

Open Access•Robert Sayre, Roger Sayre et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2018

Answers to the seemingly straightforward questions “what is a mountain?” and “where are the mountains of the world?” are in fact quite complex, and there have been few attempts to map the mountains of the earth in a consistent and rigorous fashion. However, knowing exactly where mountain ecosystems are distributed on the planet is a precursor to conserving them, as called for in Sustainable Development Goals 6 and 15 of the United Nations 2030 Ag…

The revolutionary crisis is seen to take significantly different forms on the frontier and in the more settled areas. These texts thro…

The Spanish Civil War constituted one of the major focuses of political commitment for American writers in the 1930s. Similar to overall American public opinion, American writers strongly leaned toward the Republican side in the conflict. They supported the loyalists through a variety of activities, in Spain as well as the US, and through their writings, fictional and non-fictional. In their relation to the war they adopted a number of different …

  • Solitude in Society: A Sociological Study in French Literature

    Robert Sayre, Robert F Sayre•BOOK•Solitude in Society•1978

Robert Sayre brings a special kind of literary intelligence to his study of the problem of isolation in modern society. He gives us a spirited instance of a sociological approach to literature, more specifically a Marxist approach that forcefully links a literary theme to a social fact. In contrast to the existentialist interpretation of alienation (in which isolation is the eternal dilemma of Man), a Marxist analysis interprets solitude in socie…

    Robert Sayre, Robert F Sayre•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•1986

The Spanish Civil War, a high point of «commitment» for Anglo-American writers, played an ambivalent role in their intellectual trajectories vis-à-vis Communism. A common pattern consisted of « fellow-traveling» with Stalinism, followed by a crisis of doubt, identification with a Leftist dissident tendency, and eventually total rejection of Communism. In some cases the Spanish war hastened, while in others it retarded this process. For Dos Passos…
