  • The burden of complexity: Dealing with measurement and taxation in the Sound Toll registers – a response to Yrjö Kaukiainen

    Open Access•Werner Scheltjens•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2024

This paper replies to a research note outlining a method for the conversion of weights and measures in the Danish Sound Toll registers. Whereas Yrjö Kaukiainen argues that the use of values for Danish units of measurement is sufficient, Werner Scheltjens highlights the complexity of pre-modern weights and measures, and raises concerns about the simplification of the measurement and taxation procedures at the customs office in the Danish Sound

  • The Contribution of Historical Databases to the Current State of Digital Maritime History: Introduction

    Silvia Marzagalli, Werner Scheltjens et al.•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•2023•References: 3

Maritime history can be broadly defined as an approach considering the sea as a dynamic agent of change. It takes into account economic, social, political, cultural, and environmental issues in the relation of human societies to the sea and examines the seas’ impact on societies. Maritime history, since the 1950s, has been an expanding field of historical research, now visible in the academic world through an international association (IMHA), nat…

  • Baltic Drugs Traffic, 1650–1850. Sound Toll Registers Online as a Source for the Import of Exotic Medicines in the Baltic Sea Area

Jan Willem Veluwenkamp, Werner Scheltjens•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The analysis of the shipping of five key Asian, African and American drugs through the Danish Sound in the period 1650-1850 suggests that the Baltic Sea area absorbed exotic medicinal drugs in significant quantities only from the second half of the eighteenth century-at least about a century later than northwest Europe. This may be an indication that the area differed significantly from northwest Europe in the development of medical services. We …

  • The Changing Geography of Demand for Dutch Maritime Transport in the Eighteenth Century

    Werner Scheltjens•ARTICLE•Histoire & Mesure•2012

This paper studies the relationship between shipping, merchant business and product supply and demand from an economic-geographical perspective. The case study of grain transportation in the eighteenth century shows that it is established that structural changes in supply and demand led to the emergence of new transportation routes, provoking a shift from a bilateral trade pattern to a diversified pattern involving many locations, none of which w…

  • The Influence of Spatial Change on Operational Strategies in Early Modern Dutch Shipping: A Case Study of Dutch Shipping in the Gulf of Finland and Archangel, 1703–1740

    Open Access•Werner Scheltjens•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2011

A fundamental discrepancy between neoclassical and institutional research approaches lies at the core of contrasting results in historical studies about maritime shipping and trade. However, there is one point on which both contrasting approaches agree: both of them see maritime shipping as a spin-off effect and even more often as an illustration of trade. Thus, the mere fact that maritime transportation is an economic activity in its own right i…
