  • Switzerland–Taiwan Free Trade

    Open Access•Patrick Ziltener•ARTICLE•International Journal of Taiwan…•2025

Taiwan remains a key missing link in Switzerland’s network of Free Trade Agreements ( fta s) in East Asia. This study updates the author’s 2016 research, assessing the potential benefits of mutual tariff abolition under a possible bilateral economic agreement between Switzerland and Taiwan, both members of the World Trade Organization. Drawing on data for the period from 2016 to 2020, it identifies that over 50 percent of trade between the two ec…

  • RCEP versus CPTPP

Patrick Ziltener, Ranti Yulia Wardani•ARTICLE•European Journal of East Asian…•2025

The first two decades of the 21st century saw a process of competitive regionalisation going on in the Asia-Pacific region. On the one side, there has been the evolution of the ASEAN plus-system leading to the mega regional Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership ( RCEP ), and on the other side there is the originally P4-founded, then US -driven Trans-Pacific Partnership ( TPP ) which led to the open and dynamic CPTPP -11. From an ASEAN persp…

  • Employee Participation in Practice

Open Access•Patrick Ziltener, Heinz Gabathuler•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2019

The article gives an overview on the situation of firm-level employee representation in the private sector in Switzerland: Where are they frequent? Which formal status do they enjoy? What are the topics they deal with? How do they position themselves between the affiliation to the firm and the interconnection beyond the limits of the firm? We show that the strong decentralisation of industrial relations in Switzerland leads to regulations and con…

We present a new dataset with 15 indicators for the political, economic and social impact of colonialism. This dataset and our four indices for the impact of colonialism create for the first time the opportunity to compare directly the levels of colonial transformation for a sample of 83 African and Asian countries. Some of our exploratory findings on the interrelation of the dimensions show that in British colonies political domination was in ge…

  • Europäische Integration auf Unternehmensebene

Open Access•Patrick Ziltener, Heinz Gabathuler•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2016

  • Japan's FTA Strategy toward Highly Developed Countries

    Hidetaka Yoshimatsu, Patrick Ziltener•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2010•Cited by: 1

This article analyzes Japan's motivations in opening negotiations on free trade agreements with Australia and Switzerland, highlighting intersections between domestic and international factors. While Australia is a security ally of Japan and a main source of natural resources, Switzerland is a traditional ally in World Trade Organization negotiations and considered a gateway to the European market

  • The Weight of the Past

    Open Access•Patrick Ziltener, Hans-Peter Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 81

Twenty years ago, Lenski and Nolan published a seminal article in which they established empirical links between modern development and traditional technology in developing countries. This analysis is expanded in two ways: by improving the indicators of traditional technologies, and by introducing a second dimension of structural complexity, the socio-political differentiation of traditional societies. Though two indices measure functionally rela…

  • Political and economic logic of western european integration

Open Access•Volker Bornschier, Mark Herkenrath et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2004•Cited by: 4

One of the few cross-national studies, which contrast members of the EU with a comparable set of other countries as benchmark, suggested that membership is beneficial for economic growth and may cause faster economic convergence of less wealthy EU member states. Employing a newly collected data set on inter-state transfers in the EU, we test whether this faster economic convergence is due to access to the Internal Market (proposition of the econ…

This article reviews and critically analyzes the research on the economic impact of the European Single Market Project. The empirical findings are contrasted with policymakers' plans for economic integration and with the theoretical models of integration and econometric simulations that have been at the forefront of scholarly debate over the last fifteen years. The knowledge about the impact of the Single Market project on trade and investments i…

  • EC social policy

    Open Access•Patrick Ziltener•CHAPTER•State-Building in Europe•2000

e relatively low rank of the ‘social dimension’ in the renewed push for European integration in the 1980s provides the starting point for three competing theses on the integration process. First, the cornerstone thesis holds that, from the beginning, the Europeanization of social policy was a cornerstone of the integration project as conceived by the supra-national political entrepreneur, the EC Commission, and certain governments. The conception…
