Hepatitis A serostatus and vaccination outcomes after on-campus education and point-of-care antibody testing
Background Susceptibility to hepatitis A virus (HAV) remains high among young adults in Korea, reflecting birth-cohort effects and vaccination history. Because foodborne transmission has contributed to outbreaks, students in food and nutrition or culinary arts represent a relevant target group as future food handlers. We aimed to estimate anti-HAV immunoglobulin G (IgG) seroprevalence, describe pre- to post-intervention changes in knowledge, perc…
Oral health status and behavior in elderly Koreans with periodontal disease
About half of elderly had the periodontal disease. Elderly Koreans with periodontal disease were more likely to have poor oral health and behavior than those without periodontal disease. The results of this study provide an insight into social and behavioral factors associated with periodontal diseases in older Koreans. It is necessary to confirm these results through prospective studies
Association between Family and Friend Smoking Status and Adolescent Smoking Behavior and E-Cigarette Use in Korea
Smoking is harmful to the health of adolescents because their bodies are still growing. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between the smoking status of Korean adolescents' parents and friends and their own smoking behavior. The study assessed a nationwide sample of 72,060 middle and high students from the 10th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2014). Descriptive analysis, chi-square tests, and multiple logistic regres…
Prevalence of Depressive Symptoms and Related Factors in Korean Employees
The aim of this study was to analyze the association between general working conditions and depressive symptoms among Korean employees. The target population of the study was native employees nationwide who were at least 15 years old, and 50,032 such individuals were enrolled in the study. Depressive symptoms was assessed using the WHO-5 wellbeing index. Associations between general characteristics, job-related characteristics, work environment, …
A Population-Based, Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study on Influenza Vaccination Status among Cancer Survivors in Korea
Cancer survivors are at increased risk of developing influenza-related complications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the vaccination coverage among cancer survivors in Korea using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Adult cancer survivors were selected from fourth (2007-2009) and fifth (2010-2012) KNHANES (n = 1156) datasets. General characteristics, cancer-related data, and influenza vaccination st…
The association between income inequality and all-cause mortality across urban communities in Korea
Our data demonstrate that income inequality measures are significantly associated with all-cause mortality rate after adjustment for covariates, including median household income across urban communities in Korea
Household and area income levels are associated with smoking status in the Korean adult population
The results showed that smoking is strongly associated with household income status in both men and women, and area-level income is partly associated with smoking. Effects of area-level income on smoking differed by sex and region. These findings suggest that area characteristics have contextual effects on health related behavior independent of individual characteristics
What Factors Explain Disparities in Mammography Rates Among Asian-American Immigrant Women? A Population-Based Study in California
Colorectal cancer among Koreans living in South Korea versus California
Despite almost identical CRC screening guidelines in South Korea and the USA and substantially higher screening rates among Korean Americans as compared to South Koreans, disparities remain in both populations with respect to CRC statistics. Thus, efforts to promote primary and secondary prevention of CRC in both Korean populations are critically important in both countries
A Bi-National Comparative Study of Health Behaviors of Koreans in South Korea and Korean Americans in California
Association of smoking status, cumulative smoking, duration of smoking cessation, age of starting smoking, and depression in Korean adults
Our data demonstrate that smoking is strongly associated with depression, particularly among females. These findings suggest that depression prevention may need to be combined with smoking prevention and that different strategies may be needed for males and females
Influenza Vaccination Among Adults 65 Years or Older
The present study examined the rates and related factors for influenza vaccination among the elderly Korean population during the 2008/09 influenza seasons. We obtained data for 6,391 adults aged 65 years or older from Community Health Surveys conducted in 2009 and 2010 in 13 communities in the Honam region of Korea. A multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with self-reported influenza vaccinations. In t…
Cumulative smoking exposure, duration of smoking cessation, and peripheral arterial disease in middle-aged and older Korean men
Cumulative smoking exposure and duration of smoking cessation were significantly associated with PAD in middle aged and older Korean men
Alcohol consumption and carotid artery structure in Korean adults aged 50 years and older
The results of our study indicate that alcohol consumption is inversely related to carotid IMT and positively related to carotid plaques in men, but not women. However, alcohol intake is positively associated with CCA-diameter in both men and women. Additional large population-based prospective studies are needed to confirm the effects of alcohol consumption on carotid artery structure
Effect of Maternal Thyroxine Treatment on the Postnatal Development of Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor-containing Purkinje Cell in Fetal Alcohol Effects in the Rat Cerebellum
