Instructor‐Specific Grade Inflation
Objectives This study attempts to isolate instructor‐specific measures that may be sources of grade inflation and to measure their relative importance. Methods We estimate a fixed‐effects model, using by far the most extensive data set related to grade inflation ever assembled. Our data comprise 48,038 courses taught by 1,871 distinct instructors at a large public university over a two‐decade period. Results Our results suggest that female facult…
The Determinants of the Growth of Microenterprises in Central Mexico
Microenterprises (MEs) are a critical part of developing countries' economies. However, due to shortcomings in data gathering efforts, comparatively little is reliably known about these businesses. Our data result from a door-to-door survey technique and involve 450 MEs in central Mexico. Our paper represents the first effort to quantify the effect of remittances on microenterprise performance. We also examine whether access to credit affects ME …

El peso al nacer de los niños de la principal maternidad de Uruguay
This study investigates the impact of risk factors on birthweight in the main maternity hospital in Uruguay, Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell. The data are provided by the Latin American Center for Perinatology and cover the years 1995 to 2004. The study finds that most of the included risk factors are signifi cant predictors of both birthweight and the probability of a low-birthweight birth. As expected, risk factors that can be influenced by…
Productive Efficiency and Salary Distribution
Recent theoretical research suggests that a firm's salary structure can affect the firm's productivity. We investigate the relationship between payroll inequality and production using US Major League Baseball data. Employing panel data methods, this study finds that salary inequality has a significantly negative effect on team success. A general result is that team success in term of wins does not seem to be correlated with efficiency; specifical…
An economic analysis of abortion
This paper estimates the responsiveness of abortion demand among teenage women to variations in the local availability of abortion services. This information is especially important because the policy debate centers on how restricting the availability of abortion services will affect abortion rates. In addition, it is commonly thought that teenage and adult women differ in the abortion decision process, making it necessary to evaluate teens separ…

Race, Revenues, and College Basketball
Customer discrimination may result in racial differences in the marginal revenue products generated by workers. College basketball data allow for direct comparisons of the racial differences in the marginal revenues generated by players. This article compares the revenue generating potential of the top black and white college basketball players. A highly skilled white college player generates over $100,000 in per game revenues as compared to arou…
