  • The Art of Composition and Play

    Open Access•Jean-Yves Pellegrin, Richard Powers•ARTICLE•Transatlantica•2023

Since Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance (1985), his first novel, Richard Powers has published thirteen books. In a career spanning nearly forty years, he has explored a wide range of subjects, and a variety of writing styles and compositional methods. His work includes texts with complex narrative structures and a sophisticated style, such as The Gold Bug Variations (1991) and Operation Wandering Soul (1993), as well as more conventional nove…

  • L’autorité en question dans The Gold Bug Variations de Richard Powers

    Jean-Yves Pellegrin•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•2023•References: 1

If by entrusting its primary narrator with the responsibility of writing and meaning, the narrative of The Gold Bug Variations seems to institute the authority of the authorial figure, the polyphonic narration of the novel makes the figure waver and invites the reader to elucidate this paradox. The decoding of DNA, the central object of the text and a mise en abyme of its own deciphering, appears as a possible model of the ambiguous relation of a…

  • Nathalie Aghoro, Sounding the Novel , Voice in Twenty-first Century American Fiction , Heidelberg

This article aims at exploring the ways in which Richard Powers’ latest novel Generosity may be construed as a meditation on fiction’s capacity to “say whom we love” and save them. It suggests that, more than the fictitious character of the novel, what hinders the project is the plot-oriented nature of all narrative discourse

  • Only the Conversation Matters

    Open Access•Jean-Yves Pellegrin•ARTICLE•European Journal of American…•2007

From Three Farmers on Their Way to a Dance (1985) to The Echo Maker (2006), American novelist Richard Powers explores the effects of modern science and technology on human lives. He teaches in the Creative Writing M.F.A. program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998, has been awarded a MacArthur Fellow (1989) and is the recipient of a Lannan Literary Award (…

  • L'effet trompe-l'œil dans Phosphor in Dreamland de Rikki Ducornet

    Jean-Yves Pellegrin•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•2002

This essay suggests that Phosphor in Dreamland by Rikki Ducornet may read as a mock attempt to confer the powerful virtues of three-dimensional images on writing. In the same way as stereoscopic photography and trompe-l’œil painting conjure up hallucinatory visions of what they represent, words are intended to be so potent as to impose on the reader the actual presence of what they refer to. However, the performative power language is striving fo…

  • The Fountains of Neptune ou l'écriture alchimique

    Jean-Yves Pellegrin•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•2002

This article examines the numerous water metaphors at work in Rikki Ducornet's The Fountains of Neptune and suggests that water, being a most mutable substance, is used as an agent of linguistic transformations reminiscent of alchemical transmutations. However, this project, which aims at sub-stantializing writing, miscarries as words fail to turn into things. Yet this very failure is what confers its specific and almost magic power on Ducornet's…

  • Le désordre du discours dans End Zone de Don DeLillo

    Jean-Yves Pellegrin•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•1998

If logic and mathematics as scientific languages are meant to bring out order in the world, they cause disorder when pervading other languages. This paper examines how DeLillo's End Zone pictures the dysfunctioning of speech and the helpless linguistic fight of those who try to restore order
