  • The Terrorist State and Its Margins

    Open Access•Santiago Garaño•ARTICLE•Journal of Perpetrator Research•2023

In this article, I will analyse a seldom-heard voice in the recent history of the Southern Cone: testimonies from soldiers and former gendarmes who witnessed state crimes and, years later, found the courage to share their experiences in court. This is an unusual approach in Argentina to the study of perpetrators, which so far has prioritised public statements, official memories, and the experiences of career personnel in the Armed Forces. Instead…

  • Recent History in the Courtroom

    Open Access•Santiago Garaño•ARTICLE•International Public History•2020

In this work I reflect on a new figure that has been gaining presence in trials for crimes against humanity since 2005: the “context witness,” a specialist – usually coming from social sciences – who is presented as a witness and whose contribution is taken as testimonial evidence. I rely on my participation in the oral and public trial “Operation Independence,” in which I testified about my doctoral research on the experience of conscripts in so…

  • Cura- Malal”. Un ensayo del Servicio Militar Obligatorio en 1897

    Open Access•Santiago Garaño•ARTICLE•Revista Paginas•2017

    Open Access•Santiago Garaño•ARTICLE•Nuevo mundo mundos nuevos•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In this paper we want to reflect on how and why in the first place, militants from the Partido Revolucionario de los Trabajadores-Ejército Revolucionario del Pueblo (PRT-ERP) and afterwards on february 1975 the military authorities, built primarily the Tucumán’s mount - a relatively peripheral or marginal place on the national scene - as the center of their militant and repressive strategy, respectively. From the analysis of a series of power “st…

In this article, we reconstruct the power relations that were woven inside Villa Devoto Jail, where more than 1,200 political prisoners were concentrated during the last military dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983). On the one hand, we show how, in this space, the penal regimes and the forms of “resistance” of the detained militants became intertwined. And on the other, we examine how the political and symbolic hierarchy among different groups …

  • The Opposition Front against Compulsory Military Service

    Open Access•Santiago Garaño•ARTICLE•Genocide Studies and Prevention•2010•Cited by: 2

Compulsory military service (CMS) was in place in Argentina from 1902 to 1995. Although its abolition was directly linked to the murder of soldier Omar Carrasco, the prosecution of this case of violence should not ignore the pre-existing opposition movement that developed toward the end of the last dictatorship (1976–1983). Within the context of a wider debate on the functioning of conscription, in November 1983 a group of human-rights activists …
