If tourism pollutes the environment: Can regulatory quality or government effectiveness moderate the pollution?
This study examines the environmental impact of tourism in 27 African countries from 2000 to 2020, with a focus on the moderating roles of regulatory quality and government effectiveness. Using a series of estimation methods (FMOLS, CCR, FGLS, SGMM), the study shows that increased tourist arrivals significantly heighten environmental pollution, validating the early-stage Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. Although regulatory quality an…
The Effect of Military Spending on Unemployment in South Africa: Evidence from Total, Gender, Race and Province Unemployment Data
Despite the disparity in unemployment rates across gender, race and provinces, no study has captured the influence of military spending on unemployment rates among these groups in South Africa (SA). Thus, this study investigated the effects of military spending on total, gender, racial and provincial unemployment in SA over 2008Q1 to 2023Q4. The study applied Autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL), Dynamic ARDL and Kernel-based Regularized L…
Government expenditure and unemployment nexus in Nigeria: Does institutional quality matter
This study investigates the role of institutional quality in the government expenditure‐unemployment nexus in Nigeria using different components of government expenditures (total, recurrent, and capital expenditures). Causality tests and the autoregressive distributed lag estimation methods are used to analyse data spanning the period from 1984 to 2019. The key findings are as follows: (i) unidirectional causality runs from unemployment to total …
Toward economic resilience in Sub‐Saharan Africa: The role of institutional quality and human capital development
A viable economy's hallmark is its ability to generate positive growth rates and its capacity to sustain such growth, especially during a crisis. Economic crises have the potential to induce uncertainty, reverse pre‐crisis economic gains and force preexisting challenges to reemerge, necessitating actions on building economic resilience. Given the fragility of most countries in Sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA), the current paper evaluates the role of inst…
Attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): New Evidence on Foreign aid and the “Bundling” of Domestic Revenue Mobilization in Sub-Saharan Africa
With the global sustainable development goals, it has become imperative for developing countries, especially sub-Saharan African countries, to think inward on ways to increase domestically mobilized revenue. The recovery of the global economy within the last few years has increased foreign assistance inflow into African countries. However, the direction of its impact on domestic mobilized revenue is unclear. This study revisited the relationship …
