Pandemic Intensity Estimation using Dynamic Factor Modeling
Individual and policy reactions to the coronavirus pandemic had disparate impacts on viral transmission and were heterogeneous in their influence on economic activity and personal outcomes (Kerpen, Phil, Stephen Moore, and Casey B. Mulligan. 2022. A Final Report Card on the States’ Response to Covid-19 . Working Paper 29928. National Bureau of Economic Research). Returning to the teaching of human rights for social work. Lessons learned in Chile from the last 50-30-5 years
How should we teach recent history to uncover the links between social work and human rights? To answer this question, we critically analyze recent events in Chile with an emphasis on the training process of social work students. A series of recent events have revived the debate on memory, the guarantee of non-repetition, and human rights. The estallido social (2019), attempts to reform the constitution inherited from the military dictatorship, a…

Ennanga harp songs of Buganda
For generations up until 1966, the Kabakas (kings) of Buganda in Uganda employed up to fifty musicians to entertain at the palace each day. During the time of Muteesa II, separate ensembles of flutes, trumpets, strings, tuned drums and xylophones played twice daily in the royal enclosure for the Kabaka (P. Cooke 1996). Perhaps the most privileged musician was the omulanga (royal harpist), who was the only musician allowed to enter the inner chamb…
Xylophone music of Uganda
The amadinda and akadinda xylophone music of Buganda1 2 have been well described in the past (Anderson 1968). Good players of these xylophones now seem to be extremely scarce, and they are rarely performed in Kampala. Both instruments, although brought from villages in Buganda, formed part of a great musical tradition associated with the Kabakaâ€TMs palace. After 1966, when the palace was overrun by government forces and the kingdom abolished, th…
Deriving leisure time values for visitors to urban sports centres
Since the mid 1960s, the demand for recreational resources has been increasingly subjected to the rigours of economic evaluation. In the case of travel cost studies, an important variable is the amount of leisure time visitors incur when journeying to a site. The aim of this paper is to show empirically that the value of the travel time incurred by individuals consuming localized recreation activity, for example at a sports centre, can be much lo…
