Not Just Money or Jobs
Attracting and retaining skilled individuals remains a central challenge for rural development. This study examines how push, pull, and capability conditions combine to shape urban‐to‐rural talent migration decisions in China. Drawing on a survey of 1551 respondents across six provinces in eastern, central and western China, the study applies fuzzy‐set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to examine the configurational effects of urban qualit…

Volunteering and psychological wellbeing in college students in China
This study used data from 1871 college students across China to examine the relations among volunteering and PWB in 2020. Results of regression analysis indicate that volunteering had positive effects on the PWB of the students. Students whose motivation to volunteer was public interest had greater PWB, regardless of the degree to which they also reported private gain as a motivation. The significant interaction results indicate that students who…
Job Demands and Resources, Burnout, and Psychological Distress of Employees in the Chinese Non-profit Sector
The non-profit sector in China has expanded significantly in the past few decades. However, employees in non-profits experience high burnout rates, indicating a need to study non-profit work conditions and their effect on employees. This study applies the job demands and resources (JD-R) model and examines the effects of job demands (JD) and job resources (JR) on burnout and psychological distress experienced by non-profit employees, recruited vi…
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mindfulness in Chinese College Students During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Mindfulness has been found to have many positive effects on life outcomes, including mental health and educational achievement. However, less is known about the antecedents of mindfulness, particularly in Chinese college students. This study examines the effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on mindfulness among Chinese college students in September 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We hypothesized that ACEs negatively affected student…
Changing government in China through philanthropy
This paper shows how government programmes unified under the rubric of 'building socialist spiritual civilization' are institutionalizing philanthropy and transforming government practice in China. Spiritual civilization refers to a programme of simultaneously advancing China's market economy and socialist culture. Using a governmentality approach, the paper explains how this strategy has been translated into practice through the government-direc…
Transparency and Resource Allocation of Grassroots Nonprofits in China
Organizational transparency has become a prominent concern for the nonprofit sector as it expands globally. Transparency is important to organizational accountability, which may be indicated by how nonprofits allocate their resources. In this study, we examine the relationship between nonprofits’ transparency and their resource allocation to programs, administration, and fundraising. Our study focuses on China, where a nascent nonprofit sector is…

Whole-community intervention for left-behind children in rural China
So They’ll Have Somewhere to Go”
Despite policy calling for compulsory education in China, many children with autism are not in school. This article examines the establishment of autism-related non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in China to meet needs not being met by the state. We focus on the background and motivation in founding and running these NGOs, after first considering the broader context of state decentralization and NGOs roles in supplementing welfare needs in ref…
Trends in Overseas Philanthropy by Chinese Foundations
In recent years, Chinese foundations have become increasingly involved in overseas charitable activities. This paper first describes the current status of Chinese foundations’ involvement in overseas charitable activities, including the development stage, the extent of participation, and the scale and scope of donations. Next, the paper analyzes the factors that impact Chinese foundations’ overseas donations. The study finds that fund size and th…
Private Wealth, Philanthropy, and Social Development
Growing income inequality has created excessive barriers to social mobility for the poor. Charitable giving by the wealthy can reduce the societal effects of the income gap by reinvestment in public goods such as education. We apply the cipp model to investigate the role of philanthropy in advancing educational opportunities in the United States and China, using historical and contemporary cases of individual philanthropists. The findings suggest…
Effect of Post-Disaster School Social Work and Its Causal Analysis
This research, based on a case study of Foundation A’s Ya’an post-quake relief project, combines static group-to-group comparative experiments and discussions of focus groups to discuss and analyze the effect of post-disaster school social work and its cause in the four dimensions of psychological status, health status, learning status and behavior. Comparatively speaking, the post-disaster school social work has had the most notable positive inf…
The Influence of Elite Philanthropy on NGO Development in China
Scholars have explained the rise of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in China since the period of reform and opening in terms of a changing political and economic environment, NGO policy, international non-governmental organisations (INGOs), and the influence of communications media and the Internet. This article proposes a new explanatory factor: the philanthropy of China’s new wealthy. Four cases are used to analyse the influences of the p…
Instrumental Civil Rights and Institutionalized Participation in China
The current study uses the Wukan protest as a case study to assert that the Chinese farmers involved in the incident demonstrated “instrumental civil rights consciousness” in their protest. Civil rights is a means by which farmers strive for their economic rights and not an end in itself. Without real “rights consciousness,” the Wukan protests resemble “institutionalized participation” more than “rightful resistance.” The grassroots elections and…
