Between public service and market
This paper contributes to the international debate on the changes affecting recruitment and orientation processes toward higher education. Based on qualitative research involving 19 Italian public universities, the study analyses the transformations in communication, recruitment and orientation activities within platformization and increasing institutional competition. Drawing on Bourdieusian conceptual categories, the analysis highlights how pla…
Field effects and work‐based learning
This essay analyses the implementation of a work‐based learning policy in upper secondary schools in Italy. The policy aims to improve student orientation and enhance their soft skills. Based on two ethnographic research studies in Italy, this essay utilises Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework, particularly the ‘field’ concept, to examine how this policy has been implemented in different tracks of the Italian school system in a peripheral reg…
Digital Capital and Cultural Capital in education

We aim to bring into the international debate the existence of a South in a European country which is usually and univocally considered to belong to the …
Stay home and be unfair
This article focuses on the educational practices and strategies mobilised by Italian families with children aged six years and younger, during the health crisis caused by the COVID‐19 pandemic in Italy, in 2020. Specifically, we analyse practices and strategies mobilised by families from different social milieus living in rural or urban contexts. We argue that the shift in childcare practices and needs during the pandemic promoted the reaffirmat…
Cultural capital and educational strategies. Shaping boundaries between groups of students with homologous cultural behaviours
Rather than assessing its causal effect on educational attainment, the authors of this article aim to use the concept of cultural capital to define a huge, complex and interconnected collection of educational and school strategies adopted by students and families and to examine the way that these strategies are related to school inequalities. Data analysed come from the 2009 Italian survey for the Program for International Student Assessment run …
