Normative White Internet Practices: Performances at the Edge of a Digital Black Community
Following the murder of George Floyd, more than 2,000 White-identifying Reddit users applied to the subreddit, r/BlackPeopleTwitter, in hopes of becoming verified allies. Prior research has argued that White people may seek out digital contexts to learn about and practice race. However, few studies examine why, and none problematize the relationship between normative internet practices and Whiteness—normative White internet practices. In collabor…
A Narrative Analysis of the Group for Abolishing Whiteness: Tensions, Limitations, and Possibilities
In October 2019, 26 white-identifying students met in the Group for Abolishing Whiteness (GfAW). The GfAW was a biweekly intragroup dialogic space where white-identifying students examined and uprooted their everyday relationship to whiteness. The GfAW diverged from other, more traditional dialogic spaces in that it focused on intragroup practice and was oriented toward white abolition, ending whiteness as a social construct and dominant force, r…
Digital White Racial Socialization: Social Media and the Case of Whiteness
The Internet has become a ubiquitous central element in the lives of adolescents. In this conceptual paper, we focus on digital white racial socialization (D-WRS), arguing: (1) for an expanded conceptualization of WRS as doings, and (2) that social media may be changing processes of WRS through an extension of traditional settings and through the creation of unique social contexts. We highlight the uniqueness of social media contexts due to the d…
The Racial Projects of White Social Work Students
Despite a theoretical shift toward anti-racism, racial projects within social work assert public positions against structural racism, while upholding mechanisms that perpetuate its existence. Analyzing the perceptions and intentions of incoming white liberal social work students is necessary for any effort to deconstruct racial projects in the social work profession. The sample used in the present study is composed of a white (n = 139), mostly li…
Uprooting (Our) Whiteness
Social work education reinforces hegemonic Whiteness through pedagogies and practices that rely on an entitlement to and harvesting of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color's lived experiences for the purpose of its tacit audience: White students. Despite this exploitative and harmful reliance on objectified lived experiences, White students continue to lack critical understanding of their racial positionality and connections to racism. Uprootin…
Vatas: An Open-Source Web Platform for Visual and Textual Analysis of Social Media
Social media have created a new environmental context for the study of social and human behavior and services. Although social work researchers have become increasingly interested in the use of social media to address social problems, they have been slow to adapt tools that are flexible and convenient for analyzing social media data. They have also given inadequate attention to bias and representation inherent in many multimedia data sets. This a…
You Set Me Up: Gendered Perceptions of Twitter Communication Among Black Chicago Youth
We sought to identify the key dynamics in the relationship between social media and violence by identifying new mechanisms that elucidate how Internet banging becomes offline violence through the perceptions of the Black and Latino boys and men. We conducted 33 interviews with Black and Latino boys and men aged 14-24 who live in Chicago, have experience with gang violence, and are social media users. In our investigation of the use of social medi…
Artificial Intelligence and Inclusion: Formerly Gang-Involved Youth as Domain Experts for Analyzing Unstructured Twitter Data
Mining social media data for studying the human condition has created new and unique challenges. When analyzing social media data from marginalized communities, algorithms lack the ability to accurately interpret off-line context, which may lead to dangerous assumptions about and implications for marginalized communities. To combat this challenge, we hired formerly gang-involved young people as domain experts for contextualizing social media data…
