  • The Oxford Handbook of Film Theory

Kyle Stevens•EDITOR•BOOK•The Oxford Handbook of Film Theory•2022

Despite changes in the media landscape, film remains a vital force in contemporary culture, as do our ideas of what “a movie” or “the cinematic” are. Indeed, we might say that the category of film now only exists in theory. Whereas film-theoretical discussion at the turn of the twenty-first century was preoccupied, understandably, by digital technology’s permeation of virtually all aspects of the film object, this volume moves the conversation aw…

  • The digital human something; or, the case of Miquela

    Open Access•Kyle Stevens, Κ Ν Stevens•ARTICLE•Screen•2022

The major Hollywood casting agency CAA recently signed a new performer, Miquela, a young woman who identifies as queer and multi-ethnic. She is also digital. Miquela rose to fame as a ‘virtual influencer’, one of several such figures on social media who share their seeming-lives with millions of followers. She makes music, has a biologically human boyfriend, and even takes selfies in moisturizing face masks. Miquela is part of a growing populatio…

  • Romantic comedy and the virtues of predictability

Kyle Stevens, Κ Ν Stevens•ARTICLE•New Review of Film and Television…•2020

While cinematic narratives are often evaluated and enjoyed in terms of their ability to captivate through suspense and revelation, in this essay, I mount a defense of narrative predictability. I take the genre of romantic comedy, arguably the most critically derided for its formulaic nature, as a case study, arguing that not only are there virtues to predictability but that the negative values that have been attached to it are often masculinist a…

  • Mapplethorpe

    Kyle Stevens•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2017

In March 2016, twinned retrospectives of Robert Mapplethorpe's lifework, focused on his photographic output, opened at the Getty Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In Mapplethorpe, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato use that occasion as an impetus to recount the artist's biography. Those unfamiliar with Mapplethorpe's work will be exposed to a solid overview of the artist and become intimate with his most celebrated images. To its cred…

  • Tossing truths

    Open Access•Kyle Stevens, Κ Ν Stevens•ARTICLE•Critical Quarterly•2010

This paper theorises the style of improvisational comedy innovated by Mike Nichols and Elaine May in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Nichols and May's commentary relies on the listener's willingness to grasp – and to mock – conventions of ordinary language, and I recount the duo's history while examining their affinity to the contemporaneous work of J. L. Austin. Doing so allows me to demonstrate that Nichols and May complicate Austin's class of …
