Obwohl derlei…

  • Why do Public Debates Escalate? Trigger Points and the Moral Dynamics of “Hot Politics”

Open Access•Linus Westheuser, Thomas Lux et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2026

Escalating, emotionally charged, and moralized forms of controversy are a central feature of contemporary politics. Our study develops a framework for understanding how political debates between ordinary citizens become heated; why certain issues provoke particularly strong emotions; and how this affective potential is weaponized by "polarization entrepreneurs" in politics and the media. Based on an analysis of focus group discussions conducted i…

  • Boundaries and cleavages: Elements of a cultural sociology of political divides

    Open Access•Linus Westheuser•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural and…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 33

This article advances a cultural sociological approach to political cleavages by bringing cleavage theory into dialogue with research on symbolic boundaries. While structural and institutional aspects of cleavages are well studied, the ways in which political divides take root in everyday life and collective identities have only recently become a central focus of research. In this piece, I conceptualize the group dimension of cleavage formation a…

  • Das Klima der Ungleichheit. Zur sozialen Struktur von Klimakonflikten

Open Access•Linus Westheuser, Steffen Mau et al.•ARTICLE•Berliner Journal für Soziologie•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 6

  • Cleavage theory meets Bourdieu: Studying the Role of Group Identities in Cleavage Formation

    Open Access•Linus Westheuser, Delia Zollinger•ARTICLE•European Political Science Review•2025•Cited by: 20•References: 93

In this paper, we develop a framework for studying the role of group identities in contemporary cleavage formation. Identities, we suggest, hold the key to a central conundrum of current political sociology: the fact that today’s electoral realignments appear to be rooted in the social structure of post-industrial societies, while the decline of mass organizations has dissolved traditional links between politics and social structure. Bringing cle…

  • Moral Disapproval: The Political Consciousness of the Demobilized Working Class

    Open Access•Linus Westheuser, Linda J Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2025•References: 75

This study maps latent forms of political consciousness in the contemporary working class, moving beyond a narrow focus on far-right leanings among workers. Based on in-depth interviews with German manual workers, we reconstruct how workers criticize injustices of redistribution, recognition, and representation. We show that rather than any systematic political ideology, what dominates workers' accounts is the moral scandalization of broken promi…

  • Cleavage politics in ordinary reasoning: How common sense divides

    Open Access•Koen Damhuis, Linus Westheuser•ARTICLE•European Societies•2024•Cited by: 12•References: 45

This study explores how the ideological divide between the radical right and liberal left is anchored in the common sense reasoning of ordinary citizens. Across Western Europe, cleavage research has documented a divide in attitudes towards immigration and cultural liberalization which some view as a new cleavage of ‘universalism’ versus ‘particularism’. Yet it is unclear how this squares with the fact that most citizens are non-ideologues with on…

  • Class without consciousness. The politics of demobilized class societies

  • Verletzte Ansprüche. Zur Grammatik des politischen Bewusstseins von ArbeiterInnen

    Open Access•Linda J Beck, Linda Beck et al.•ARTICLE•Berliner Journal für Soziologie•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 30
