  • The Problematic Public

  • The humanitarian persona

    Open Access•Kristian Bjorkdahl•ARTICLE•National Identities•2024•References: 4

A notable aspect of Norwegians' national identity is that they think of themselves as a 'peace nation' and a 'humanitarian superpower'. It is not obvious, however, how they make this identity work: Foreign politics is a distinctly expert field, and as such, its practice is quite distant from the everyday experience of most citizens. How does an area of politics that most people are largely ignorant about become such an important part of a nation'…

  • Kan vi ha tillit til tilliten

    Kristian Bjorkdahl•ARTICLE•Nytt Norsk Tidsskrift•2022

  • From ritual loss of life to loss of living rituals

    Open Access•Kristian Bjorkdahl, Karen Lykke Syse•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 4

The increasingly industrial character of meat production has entailed significant changes to the relations we have to the animals we eat. In this article we first describe some of the practices and rituals that characterized slaughter in Norway up to the first decades of the 20th century. In this period, Norwegians drew on rituals to make the killing of an animal meaningful and acceptable. Then, by exploring the original impetus toward “humane sl…

  • Accountability versus learning in aid evaluation

Open Access•Hilde Reinertsen, Kristian Bjorkdahl et al.•ARTICLE•Evaluation•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 14

Learning and accountability are customarily defined as ‘the dual purpose’ of development aid evaluation, yet this notion is contested. Based on an overview of the existing literature, we identify four ideal type positions in this debate: (1) accountability and learning are complementary objectives, (2) there is a reconcilable tension, (3) there are problematic trade-offs and (4) the two are irreconcilable. Drawing on empirical evidence from Swede…

  • Welfare Washing

Kristian Bjorkdahl, Karen Lykke Syse et al.•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

In this article, our starting point is that people who are plagued by the so-called meat paradox must find ways of making meat consumption safe from the realities of meat production. They do this by way of various mechanisms of denial, which obfuscate contemporary industrial meat production. We focus on how advertisements become one notable vehicle of such denial, and select three examples for close reading. Focusing on the rhetorical techniques …

  • Pipe Dreams of the Nouveaux Riches

    Open Access•Kristian Bjorkdahl•ARTICLE•Culture Unbound Journal of…•2021

World expos are occasions for the type of rhetorical display known as 'epideictic,' and as such, they provide glimpses into how a nation wants to be seen at a particular point in time. In this article, I probe into Norway's pavilion at the 1992 expo in Seville, Spain, for answers to what Norway wanted to be in the early 1990s. I will argue that Norway's pavilion, a 'deconstructed structure' that centered on a somewhat ambiguous pipe, signals a co…

  • Fear of the Fear of the Flu

    Open Access•Kristian Bjorkdahl, Benedicte Carlsen•ARTICLE•Science Communication•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 6

In this article, we present a qualitative study of the Norwegian print news coverage of the 2009 pandemic. In initial research, we found fear to be a notable aspect of the coverage. In studying a relevant subsample in-depth, we discovered that, although there was no sound basis on which to make conclusions about what effects the coverage was having on the public, various actors—including media themselves—came on the mediated scene to express fear…

  • Animal Housing and Human-Animal Relations

    Open Access•Kristian Bjorkdahl, Tone Druglitrø•BOOK•Animal Housing and Human-Animal…•2016•Cited by: 6•References: 45

This book provides an in-depth investigation into the practices of animal housing systems with international contributions from across the humanities and social sciences. By attending to a range of different sites such as the zoo, the laboratory, the farm and the animal shelter, to name a few, the book explores material technologies from the perspective that these are integrated parts of a larger biopolitical infrastructure and questions how anim…
