An Inverted‐U, an Elephant or Neither? Exploring the Link Between Migrant Integration Policies and Pro‐Immigrant Sentiment
The increasing inflow of migrants from outside Europe has intensified efforts to promote social and economic inclusion while reinforcing social cohesion. These efforts are essential for fostering a fair society, which, in turn, supports a dynamic economy that benefits everyone. In this paper, we examine the relationship between integration policies and pro‐immigrant sentiment, which is regarded as a key‐factor in facilitating migrant integration.…
The local dimension of legitimation
We study the emergence of a new population of firms and show that legitimation is a local phenomenon and stimulates entry. However, legitimation is offset by competition as the number of firms increases. We provide evidence that the legitimation and competition effects within the municipality dominate the effects in a larger area. We also give a methodological contribution and show that the magnitude of the legitimation and competition effects is…
Handling Heterogeneity in Assessing Residential Satisfaction
Residential satisfaction depends on housing and neighborhood conditions in addition to housing cost affordability. To determine the relative importance of these factors, their average effect is usually estimated using sample data, eventually split in subsamples to represent different levels of socioeconomic status. A concern about the division of households into groups is that, as groups are modified or group assignments change, results of quanti…

The value of culture to urban housing markets
Cultural amenities are the expression of a cultural environment, given by a combination of aesthetic factors, styles, rhythms and behaviours, which contribute to make a neighbourhood vibrant and more enjoyable. Following the hedonic approach, we propose an empirical strategy to capture the multiple effects of cultural amenities, as well as the effects produced by green areas, public transport and university proximity. The results are used to dete…
A Geostatistical Approach to Assess the Spatial Association between Indoor Radon Concentration, Geological Features and Building Characteristics
Radon is a natural gas known to be the main contributor to natural background radiation exposure and second to smoking, a major leading cause of lung cancer. The main source of radon is the soil, but the gas can enter buildings in many different ways and reach high indoor concentrations. Monitoring surveys have been promoted in many countries in order to assess the exposure of people to radon. In this paper, two complementary aspects are investig…
Bayesian spatial analysis of demographic survey data
In this paper we analyze the spatial patterns of the risk of unprotected sexual intercourse for Italian women during their initial experience with sexual intercourse. We rely on geo-referenced survey data from the Italian Fertility and Family Survey, a
Spatial profiles in the analysis of event histories
The aim of this paper is mainly methodological using individual‐level retrospective data from the Italian Fertility and Family Survey. Linking individual‐level data with geographical characteristics of the community, we firstly used non‐parametric methods, and in particular the bi‐dimensional LOESS (locally weighted regression) method, to build smoothed maps of the transition to first sexual intercourse. Secondly, we used a discrete‐time multilev…
