  • The Risk of Co-offending at Shopping Malls

Open Access•Dennis M Savard, Patrick Webb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social Science•2025

Research suggests that co-offending among juveniles can be problematic. Few studies examine how specific locations moderate the relationship between age, co-offending, and subsequent violence. Using the National Incident-Based Reporting System (2016–2020), this study will analyze the influence of age on the impact of solo and co-offending in shopping malls while considering situational factors that affect victim injuries. By treating the shopping…

  • Applications of Forensic Sociology and Criminology to Civil Litigation

    Open Access•Daniel B Kennedy•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Social Science•2013

Social scientists play an increasingly important role in the prosecution and defense of both criminal and civil matters before the courts. An expanding area of forensic sociology and criminology involves the analysis of crime foreseeability and security standards of care as they relate to the question of liability for negligent security. Criminologists analyze prior crimes at a location and consider the totality of circumstances in order to deter…

  • Hostile Attribution in Perceived Justification of Workplace Aggression

    Open Access•Robert J Homant, Daniel B Kennedy•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2003

A 10-item Hostile Attribution Scale was developed to test the hypothesis that hostile attribution is predictive of support for aggression in frustrating workplace situations in which a supervisor's motivation is ambiguous. The Hostile Attribution Scale showed good test-retest reliability (.80), but weak internal consistency (alpha=.60). For one workplace scenario (Steve), hostile attribution predicted aggression in the ambiguous but not the defin…

    Open Access•Daniel B Kennedy, Robert J Homant•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1986

A number of authors have expressed concern over the possibility that private security personnel pose a threat to citizens because work-related activities of the former are not controlled by the Bill of Rights. Samples of security employees, police officers, business people, and nurses were compared on the Locus of Responsibility for Crime scale. While police were the most conservative and nurses were the most liberal, security managers did not di…
