Literature, Region, Religion
The article discusses the main themes of Flannery O’Connor’s essays collected in her posthumously published book Mystery and Manners (1969). The two eponymous words suggest a kind of dichotomy, but in essence they signify the inseparability of the social and the religious in O’Connor’s writing. According to the writer, manners shape attitudes which in turn decide about the quality of collective life. The realm of manners, governed by logic, does …
Heroic Soldiers, Justified Wars
Polish popular film has responded to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq with two productions: the TV series Misja: Afganistan (dir. Maciej Dejczer, 2012) and the feature film Karbala (dir. Krzysztof Łukaszewicz, 2015). They do not reflect the prevailing views of the public on these two military conflicts, but rather appeal to the general imaginings about Polish wars in the course of history. As they leave out issues of politics, it is the portrayal…
Redefining colonial identities in contemporary transnational westerns
In this article, I discuss two contemporary films that exemplify the use of the western genre for historical reassessments in varied national contexts: Tracker (2010, dir. Ian Sharp, New Zealand/UK) and Black ’47 (2018, dir. Lance Daly, Ireland). The two films employ similar plot structures, based on the motif of pursuit. In Tracker , set in the aftermath of the Boer wars, a former Boer fighter, now in New Zealand, searches for an assimilated Māo…
Na pograniczu narodów i kultur
Ever since its inception in 1980, the Lublin-based quarterly Akcent has played a crucial role in the shaping of the artistic and intellectual life of the city and its region. While issues of local and regional significance have been an important part of the journal's content, its editors and authors from the beginning have stressed the necessity to look beyond the narrowly defined specificity of such issues and to broaden the contexts of their an…

Degeneration of Settler Colonialism in Contemporary Cinematic Depictions of the U.S. West
The settler’s situation is underpinned by the fear of having been caught in a process of endless transition, hence the determination to define the parameters of collective sovereignty and to establish a satisfactory existential basis. The sense of uncertainty that underlies the settler’s situation accounts for the necessity of developing power structures that sustain the settler collective’s striving to complete its design, and this triggers a ra…
Portrayals of Degenerate Religious Leaders in Contemporary Film Westerns
This article discusses three contemporary film Westerns – Sweetwater (2013, dir. Logan Miller), The Duel (2016, dir. Kieran Darcy-Smith), and Brimstone (2016, dir. Martin Koolhoven) – with respect to their depiction of certain extreme forms of religiosity as a manifestation of the degeneration of the settler colonial social order. The plots of these three films revolve around the conflict between the hero/heroine and his/her antagonist who happen…
Secrecy, Suspicion, Exposure
The article discusses the ways in which Walter Van Tilburg Clark’s 1940 novel The Ox-Bow Incident problematizes the issues of secrecy, suspicion, gossip and exposure as a basis for the depiction of a variety of regulatory practices in a hierarchized settler society whose structures of authority enter a phase of renegotiation. The novel can be read as a portrayal of the Far West’s transition toward a more egalitarian and modern social organization…

Polish Literary Depictions of Native Americans in Soviet-Era Adventure Novels
In his book Indians in Unexpected Places, Philip J. Deloria demonstrates how Native Americans became engaged with the processes of modernization in the opening decades of the twentieth century, such as the growth of cinematography, the popularity of sports, or the development of auto-mobility. He shows the Native presence in the areas of American cultural production where Indians were not believed to be found. Deloria’s argument revolves around t…
