Spain’s Francoist Broadway
This article traces the itinerary followed by the earliest Broadway musicals to be imported to Madrid in the 1950s and 1960s. Such innovative format dazzled critics and audiences, carving out a niche of enthusiastic followers that would grow larger over time. The handful of works borrowed in this period will receive attention, especially insofar as their reception is concerned. The final phase of the Francoist dictatorship brought an increased vi…
Tennessee Williams’s Misunderstood ‘memory play’
Tennessee Williams famously called The Glass Menagerie a ‘memory play’. This remark has been consistently overlooked or misinterpreted by critics, unleashing a tradition of approaching the play in a rather confusing fashion concerning who the characters are and how the playwright uses them. This paper engages with the character of Amanda. First of all, I will trace major transformations in the conception of characters throughout twentieth-century…
Working with Latinx Populations
The current political climate and larger systemic context have impacted crimes and discrimination against Latinxs in the United States. Stigmatizing rhetoric and policies not only impact those who they are targeting but can also have an impact on biases held by clinicians. To counteract these sociopolitical effects, we highlight the strengths of various Latinx cultural values of faith and religion, familismo, machismo, cabellerismo, and independe…
Negotiating Transcendentalism, Escaping « Paradise
By reviewing the critical literature on Melville and Transcendentalism and then undertaking a close reading of Moby-Dick (1851), this paper argues that the novel reflects, among other things, an ongoing debate between the novelist and Transcendentalist philosophy. While in later works, Melville seems to express a more robust condemnation of the Concord movement and its dangerous idealism, Moby-Dick occupies less firmly-defined territory. The Tran…
