    Hélène Le Dantec-Lowry•ARTICLE•Revue française d’études…•2017

This essay focuses on the reception of antebellum slave narratives. While recognizing that slave narratives were predominantly directed toward a white middle-class northern audience, I argue that their intended and actual readership included other groups such as Southerners, African Americans, and children. Drawing on a variety of primary sources I study some of the ways these groups may have read and understood the narratives

This essay investigates the role of literature and the links between literature, news-reporting, and history in the NAACP magazine The Crisis between 1910 and the early 1920s. We do not study literature per se and do not provide an analysis of the literary style, nor do we assess the literariness of the short stories and poems printed in the 1910s. Rather, we examine the place accorded literature in the Crisis and its role in relation to the rest…

The arguments used by social scientists regarding a crisis of African-American kinship system are examined. Recent research has often countered Moynihan's thesis, focusing on the resistance of Black kin networks or on the adverse conditions faced by Blacks. The debate on this subject is shown to have evolved depending on the political context. It is argued here that a study of black families should take into account cultural specificities as well…
