Western studies have consistently shown that risky behaviors are associated with personal victimization. In Taiwan, little is known about such behaviors in relation to personal victimization. This study utilized data from the 2000 Taiwan Areas Criminal Victimization Survey to examine whether the relationship between risk-taking behaviors and personal victimization that have been established in the Western literature also applied to Taiwan. This s…

Crime reporting behavior and Black's Behavior of Law
This study seeks to extend the theoretical explanation of victims' crime reporting behavior to a social-structural framework by partially using Black's Behavior of Law theory in a non-western context. Black's theory of law postulated that police reporting varied according to five aspects of social life: stratification, morphology, culture, organization and social control. Drawing on the most recent victimization survey conducted in Taiwan, this s…
Jessor's problem behavior theory
Jessor (2008) has recently called attention to description versus explanation in cross-cultural and cross-national comparative scholarship on adolescent development, particularly, the etiology of adolescent problem behaviors. In the current study, we were interested in testing to what extent problem behavior theory replicated in samples of 10,310 adolescents from 8 distinct developmental contexts, including Asian, Eastern and Western European, No…
Juvenile Delinquency in the Republic of China
Data indicated that juvenile delinquency increased dramatically recently in the Republic of China. This paper seeks to explain this phenomenon by invoking Hirschi's Social Control Theory. However, such an explanation can be offered only when there is empirical evidence to verify the applicability of Social Control Theory to Chinese society. Though Social Control Theory has received great empirical support from many American studies, cross-cultura…
