Korean Citizens’ Attitudes Toward Income-Based Fines
Several European countries use income-based fines (i.e., day, unit, or structured fines). Under this system, a judge imposes a fine based on the offense’s seriousness and the offender’s income. Proponents argue that income-based fines promote equality in punishment and reduce unnecessary imprisonment resulting from fine defaults. However, opponents argue that income-based fines lead to inequality in punishment and are challenging to implement due…
Discrimination and fear of crime among immigrants in South Korea
Citizens’ sex offence myths and perceived effectiveness of sex offender community notification in South Korea
Scholars have argued that myths about sex offences and offenders lead to support for sex offender community notification. However, studies on a direct association supporting this argument are scarce. This study therefore explored the relationship between citizens’ perceived sex offence myths and the perceived effectiveness of notification using a survey of more than 2,000 citizens in South Korea. The ordinal regression analysis suggests that citi…
The Impacts of International Rape Laws Upon Official Rape Rates
Relying on the official rape rates, previous cross-national researchers found a significant and positive relationship between gender equality and the rates of reported rapes, and they used such findings as supporting evidence of the backlash hypothesis that increased gender equality leads to augmented violence against females. However, such a conclusion may be faulty because of the contested validity and reliability of the official rape rate. Thi…
Cross-National Examination of the Relationship Between Gender Equality and Female Homicide and Rape Victimization
This study is the first cross-national work to examine the impact of gender equality on both female homicide and rape victimization. The data set from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) was analyzed for 70 countries. Several gender equality measures were significantly and positively related to rape victimization, but were mostly not significant to female homicide. Findings for rape victimization were consistent with the backlash…
Residential burglary victimization
The current study employed the International Crime Victimization Survey for 142,665 subjects in 35 countries to compare residential burglary patterns across countries by their developmental levels. The mixed-level modeling shows that households in less developed countries were more likely to experience residential burglary than those in highly developed countries. In addition, married status and low income levels were positively, while living in …
Gender Equality, Liberalism and Attitude Toward Prostitution
Police Reporting by Sexual Assault Victims in Western and in Non-Western Countries
Test of Impacts of Gender Equality and Economic Development on Sexual Violence
Contributing Factors for High Homicide Rate in Latin America
Medical Resources and National Homicide Rates
Violence is a continuum, and homicide is only one possible consequence. Timely and adequate medical care saves the lives of the victims of violence. Thus, good medical resources are related to low homicide rates in a nation. The current study expands a medical perspective on homicide rates to a cross‐national study. This present study employs a regression analysis by using the data on homicide rates and medical resources for 170 nations. The resu…
