Building the Capacity of Adolescents as Researchers
BACKGROUND: Adolescent engagement is critical to ensuring research meets adolescent health and well-being needs; however, it is not common practice. To maintain research quality, meaningful adolescent engagement requires tailored support and training, yet limited resources exist globally. This study aimed to describe the co-creation process and outputs of developing a freely accessible online course to build adolescent research capacity in public…
Adolescent Involvement in Co‐Authoring Peer Reviewed Publications
Adolescents (10–24 years old) are increasingly being included as research partners or co‐researchers in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, there is no existing guidance that explores the nuance of how adolescents can be involved as co‐authors in peer reviewed research publications. Through this article, we reflect on our experiences co‐authoring peer reviewed publications with adolescents and support this…
The inclusion and impact of digital determinants of health in digital nutrition interventions for adolescents
Digital determinants of health (DDoH) is an emerging concept that captures domains relating to both digital health adoption and health equity. Digital transformations are reshaping many aspects of healthcare and health promotion, including how adolescent nutrition interventions are developed, delivered and utilized. As digital health interventions expand in popularity, it is crucial that they do not widen existing health disparities. This systema…
Participation their way
This study highlights the importance of adolescent involvement in NCD prevention and suggests strategies to overcome participation barriers. Recommendations include promoting meaningful engagement, improving accessibility, and fostering collaboration with decision makers. These insights are crucial for guiding future efforts to tackle NCD challenges among adolescents
Accelerating implementation of adolescent digital health prevention programs
Background: Chronic disease risk factors are increasing amongst adolescents, globally. Digital health prevention programs, which provide education and information to reduce chronic disease risk factors need to be equitable and accessible for all. For their success, multiple highly engaged stakeholders should be involved in development and implementation. This study aimed to evaluate stakeholders' support for, and perspectives on potential public …

Co-design of a personalised digital intervention to improve vegetable intake in adults living in Australian rural communities
Rural-dwelling adults expressed preferences for personalised intervention features that can enhance food literacy and engagement with community food environments. This research will inform the development of the prototyping (evaluation phase) and feasibility testing (post-design phase) of this intervention
Benchmarking online food delivery applications against menu labelling laws
Objective: It is unknown how well menu labelling schemes that enforce the display of kilojoule (kJ) labelling at point-of-sale have been implemented on online food delivery (OFD) services in Australia. This study aimed to examine the prevalence of kJ labelling on the online menus of large food outlets with more than twenty locations in the state or fifty locations nationally. A secondary aim was to evaluate the nutritional quality of menu items o…
Exploring reasons for high levels of food insecurity and low fruit and vegetable consumption among university students post-Covid-19
High rates of food insecurity and low consumption of fruit and vegetables among university students have been observed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and intensified during the pandemic. This study aimed to investigate food insecurity among university students and its associations with sociodemographic factors, fruit and vegetable consumption behaviours, and preferred campus programs to address these issues. A convenience sample of 237 Australian…
Co-Designing a Social Media Health Promotion for Young Women
This study protocol discusses the co-design and co-development of a social media health promotion program for young women. The program aims to disseminate evidence-based health information and promote healthy behaviours among young women aged 18-24 years. The evidence-base for social media interventions is explored, with examples of successful health promotion programs using social media platforms for example, Facebook. The social media health pr…
Evaluating the effect of a 12-month youth advisory group on adolescent’s leadership skills and perceptions related to chronic disease prevention research
This study found that a YAG fostered positive participatory outcomes and unique opportunities for youth participants. A successful YAG based on YPAR principles requires researchers to ensure YAG establishment and facilitation is an iterative process. Taking into consideration important barriers and enablers to YAG facilitation ensures adolescent engagement in a YAG is both meaningful and impactful

Lung Support Service
Texting for Wellness: Lung Support Service was implemented quickly, had a broad reach, with high retention and acceptability among participants. The program was low cost and required minimal staff oversight, which may facilitate future implementation. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of text messaging for the improvement of lung health outcomes and strategies for long-term pulmonary rehabilitation program maintenance

Shifting From Tokenism to Meaningful Adolescent Participation in Research for Obesity Prevention
Background: Traditionally, adolescent participation in research has been tokenistic. Adolescents are rarely afforded the opportunity to influence decision-making in research designed to prevent obesity. Engaging adolescents in meaningful decision-making may enhance research translation. This review aimed to analyze the current modes and nature of adolescent participation in obesity prevention research decision-making. Methods: A systematic scopin…
Limited Engaging and Interactive Online Health Information for Adolescents
How Helpful and What Is the Quality of Digital Sources of Healthy Lifestyle Information Used by Australian Adolescents? A Mixed Methods Study
To evaluate the digital platforms most used by adolescents for healthy lifestyle information, perceived helpfulness of platform information, helpfulness for positive behaviour changes, and quality of platforms' lifestyle health information. Mixed-methods study including a cross-sectional online survey and content analysis. Design: Publicly available data were extracted for the top three OFDS Instagram accounts for Australia, United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA) from March to May 2019 …
Food Co-Operatives
Only 5% of Australian children and adults eat enough fruit and vegetables. Two common barriers are high cost and limited access. Food co-operatives ('co-ops') may have the potential to reduce these barriers. We conducted a scoping analysis of food co-ops in the Sydney region to describe their characteristics and objectives. We also conducted a survey of members and non-members of co-ops to assess their fruit and vegetable intake using validated q…
Not to Be Harsh but Try Less to Relate to ‘the Teens’ and You’ll Relate to Them More’
Text messages remain a preferred way for adolescents to communicate, and recent evidence suggests adolescents would like access to digital healthcare options. However, there is limited evidence for text messages to engage adolescent populations in obesity prevention behaviors. We aimed to co-design a bank of text messages that are evidence-based, acceptable, and engaging for adolescents. An established iterative mixed methods process, consisting …
The barriers and enablers of healthy eating among young adults
Young adults in Western countries are gaining weight faster than their parents and are more likely to gain weight than any other age cohort. Despite this, investigation into the complex young adults' food choice motives, which enable and prevent healthy eating, has not been widely investigated. A scoping review was conducted involving an extensive literature search of four major electronic databases: Medline, Embase, PsychInfo and CINAHL. Data we…
